Callahan Claims The Hickory Hustle and Wins North Carolina Swing

Steve Callahan Wins Hickory Hustle, Claims First Ever  SUPRS North Carolina Swing Championship

Hickory, NC – November 4, 2016…For nearly as many years as Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), has been in existence, Steve Callahan has tried to win the North Carolina Swing Championship. Callahan was able to overcome the tight confines of Hickory Motor Speedway Friday night to claim the 13th Annual North Carolina Swing Championship.

“I’m shaking. I gotta calm down,” said the winner.  “This means a lot to me, it’s so cool because it’s a hard, hard race to win.”

After a blind draw for starting places, Callahan took off from the pole and led the entire 75 lap race, but it certainly wasn’t an easy go especially at the end of the race when the caution came out multiple times allowing the field to bunch back up. “I got lucky with my starting spot,” he explained. “I was sweating it at the end with all the fast guys behind me. I didn’t have a lightning fast car but it held on.”

Callahan’s car was in the best shape of any of the others and he said, “I had a lot of tire left at the end I don’t have a scratch on the car. Everything came together tonight. I want to thank everyone for coming and hope they all had a great time racing and thanks to SUPRS for all the hard work every week putting these show on for us.”

Keith Powell and Joe Achzet came home on the podium while Domenic Gioia and Derrick Backus rounded out the top five.

Callahan’s North Carolina Swing Championship was worth 20 SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship bonus points and now sits just 48 markers behind his teammate Powell who holds first place in the standings.

SUPRS honors the men and women of the United States Armed Services with the running of the Veterans Day Special next Tuesday. Levi Signature Speedway in Tennessee will host the race for the first time. There are a lot of unknowns, since none of the drivers have ever raced their sim racing supermodified at this track, but one thing is for sure, practice begins at 8:00pm with racing slated to go at 9:00.
