Warren Star of SUPRS White Knuckle Finish

Rob Warren Wins St. Patrick’s Day Grab O’ the Green at Dover

Dover, DE – March 17, 2015…Rob Warren used skill as well as luck to pull off a last lap pass of Domenic Gioia on his way to victory in a thriller for the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series Grab O’ the Green online supermodified race at Dover Downs International Speedway. Steve Callahan and Myles Maxon were right on Callahan’s rear nerf bar, crossing the line in second and third behind the winner.

“What a race,” exclaimed Warren. “My hands are sore after having a death grip on the wheel for the race. Hats off to Dom that was a heckuva race with him and for the guys behind me, doing their best to run us clean to the finish, they did a great job too.”

Rob Warren parks his online supermodified in Dover Downs Victory Lane after winning the St. Patrick’s Day Grab O’ the Green.

Warren, of Pulaski, NY, started next to Domenic Gioia and spent most of the race looking at the tail of the leader. He explained, “For the first 7/8ths of the race I felt like I was Dom’s wing man keeping everyone behind us.  He was running a very hard to pass line, holding his place but with the draft I could pretty much pop up to him at will, trouble was, it always in the wrong spots to make a pass.”

Warren goes low under Gioia to make the pass for the lead and win at Dover.

Finally, on the last lap, Warren was in a position to take a crack at the win. “Coming to the white, Dom got down onto the apron and that screwed up his momentum just enough,” he said. “Then I had a good run and it was enough to get beside him, then I went under him in turn one.”

With his momentum broken, Gioia slipped to fourth at the finish, and said, “I really wanted this one, this time of year is tough for me, as I’ve lost my grandma and mom around this time, but after a top five, I’m happy with a good run and want to say congratulations to Rob, he ran a great race.”

Last year Steve Callahan led the entire race, this year, he ran as high as third, and had a front row seat for the dramatic finish. “Like Rob, I’m shaking man, that was insane,” Callahan said. “Congrats to Rob on the win and to Domenic for running so well. That race was just a lot of fun and I’m glad I could be a part of that battle going on in front of me.”

Warren rolls across the line for the win as the pack roars to the finish behind him.

Earlier in the evening Myles Maxon broke the one year old track record of 18.992 held by Ray Sand, Jr. When he stopped the clock with a 18.967. Chris Meyers and Rob Warren won the heat races. A gap of only +0.754 separated the winner from eighth place with nearly every driver’s fastest feature lap under the brand new track record.
