January 22, 2023 – Goshen, IN…<\/strong><\/em>A change in format and feature lap length will present new challenges to the  racers of The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), that pull into \u201cThe Home of the Supermodifieds\u201d on January 24 for the Mid-Season Championship at Oswego Speedway<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extended Feature Laps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Mid-Season Championship is jam-packed with a full-night of supermodified sim racing including Time Trials, the BMK Logistics<\/a> Fast Car Dash, and Heat races. All of the preliminary events will help set the starting grid of the 75 lap Feature event.<\/p>\n\n\n

The last time the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Mid-Season Championship was 75 laps was in 2013<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

This will be the first time since 2013, and just the fourth time in the history of SUPRS, that the drivers have run more than 35 laps in a feature to determine who is crowned the Mid-Season champ. It’s also the first time the rFactor sim racing game will be used for a feature of the length for the winged supermodified Mid-Season Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last time SUPRS ran a 75 lap feature for the winged supermodified Mid-Season Championship at Oswego, Bob Gangwer won the race. Prior to that, Chris Meyers, (2011), and Rob Warren, (2012), won a 75 lapper. All three of those races were contested using the NASCAR Heat sim racing platform. So not only will the lap length be a challenge, the change in game could also throw a curve ball into the mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change in Format<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For the last 10 years, and for most of the time the race has been in existence, the SUPRS Gold Crest Mid-Season Championship for wing supermodifieds has had the Twin 35 format. In this format drivers time trialed and ran a dash, or heats, to earn a place on the the first 35 lap feature grid. Then for the second feature of the night, the starting line-up was an inverted start of the first feature’s finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the night, the points from the heats and the two feature would be added and the driver with the most would be crowned the Mid-Season Champion for the Gold Crest Wing Supermodified division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While drivers will still time trial and run the preliminaries, this year the way they line up for the preliminaries is different, and the points paid for Time Trials, the BMK Logistics Fast Car Dash, and Heat Races have changed. Drivers will try to qualify into the “SUPRS 6” so they can run the dash and earn points in that season-long challenge, as well as have a shot at starting in the first three rows of the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If they don’t make the dash, they go straight to a heat race where their finishing position determines where they start behind the “SUPRS 6” in the 75 lap feature. The twist here is, both the dash and the heats will be lined up according to SUPRS Empire State Super Series season long handicaps. So a combination of time trialing well, overcoming a handicap starting spot, and then finishing well, is always going to be on the drivers mind. In other words, going fast and finishing first has an added emphasis for this race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Points, and More Points<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Once they are in the feature, the real fun begins! For the first time in the history of the race, and SUPRS, passing points will be paid for every position a driver gains over his starting spot in the feature. This means the drivers will fight for points all night long from the time they hit the track for time trials, through earning as many passing points as they can, to the checkered flag in the feature event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The driver that ends up with the most total points overall, (the sum of all finishing points of all events plus passing points for the feature), will go home as the Mid-Season Champion and have ANOTHER 15 bonus points added to his season championship total!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And with this race being a part of the year-long Empire State Super Series Regional Tour<\/b>, they’ll earn points towards that championship as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
