Dave “SpeedyMan” Ohh Fast Lap of 11.342 Plenty Fast for 20th<\/sup> Annual Summit Classic 125 Pole at Madera Speedway<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

April 25, 2023 – Madera, CA…<\/strong><\/em>Union, CT speedster Dave Ohh’s fastest lap of 11.342 seconds was plenty fast enough for him to fly to the pole position of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Summit Classic 125 for the fifth consecutive year on Tuesday Night at Madera Speedway<\/a>. Ohh now has the all-time record for Pole Positions for the season ending race in California after being one of the last four drivers to qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n

For the first time in his career, Zach Sears of Elyria, OH has secured a front row start for the Summit Classic. Sears turned in a lap time of 11.606 seconds and after going out third for Time Trials, had to nervously wait to see if his time would hold. Anthony Corsoniti took a shot with an 11.668 right after Sears set his fast time but it was only good for third quick. Ryan Cloonan was the last car to qualify and he was close to Sears and Corsoniti, but had to settle with an 11.696 and fourth fastest of the 13 cars to qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corsoniti took his Guaranteed Starter and will go away from the third slot on Wednesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not as Fast, But Fast Enough<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There were some questions as to whether or not getting a late draw for Time Trials would be good or bad and Ohh was one of the drivers wondering before the clocks were put on the cars of how the draw would also affect tire temp in relation to track and ambient temp. Some drivers thought going early and on cold tires would be most beneficial, while others were hoping for more track temp to get the tires up to temp faster. When it was all said and done, it didn’t matter much to Ohh. “It was all about going out there trying to get a good lap in there to start,” he said. “I just couldn’t hit the marks on the second lap around to get a really fast lap like prior years, but it was certainly enough to start on the front row, and get the pole again this year.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoping to Stay Connected<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of Dave Ohh’s main concerns going into the race on Wednesday is keeping his internet connection alive for all 125 laps. Ohh who was leading the race in 2021 dropped out of the race server when his connection faded and it’s something neither he, nor his competitors have forgotten. He hopes to put all of that behind him this year, but knows it’s still a possibility. “It depends on so many things I don’t know,” he pondered. “It would be nice to complete another one of these, but if I were to get dropped towards the end it wouldn’t surprise me. Hopefully I stay connected.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ohh was the brunt of several light-hearted jabs over keeping his connection alive by the driver that will start to his right on Wednesday, Zach Sears. The two-time Summit Classic winner had a quick reply to those pokes by Sears quipping, “My advice to him is to stay in front of me because it’s going to be tough to pass me if he keeps talking crap.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best start for Sears<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After missing his first Summit Classic in 2020 due to flooding, Zach Sears has one DNF and two third place finishes. This year will be the first time he’s sat on the front row of the Summit Classic 125 and his best starting spot ever. Sears wasn’t sure his time would stick and was a bit nervous as he took both timed laps. “The nerves definitely set in coming out of turn two going down the backstretch on the first lap,” he admitted. “I knew I botched that lap, but the next lap I thought I was going to better. I went into the corner and botched that one too and everything came down to what I could produce in three and four.” Sears first lap actually ended up being his best at 11.606 but he feels he left a lot on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I tried to do something different and completely botched both laps. I was hoping to go a little faster. I wasn’t going to beat Dave, but you can always hope,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Replies to Ohh<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sears, who has wrapped up the 2023-24 Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship XX, listened intently as Dave Ohh tried to quell the jabs and pokes that Sears kept throwing from the front stretch at Madera the he said, “Well no doubt I’ll be on his bumper and was we know I’m not afraid to use it. Plus there’s always the chance he disconnects since he’s had a history of that. He then thought about what he said and stated, “If I wreck him I’ll never hear the end of it for the next six months or how ever long he doesn’t want to talk to me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a more serious tone, Sears admitted that it will be tough to topple the pole sitting champion. “There’s a 50% chance we win it, and the other 50 is he laps me and I don’t even get to see him the rest of the race,” said Sears. There may be one shot “He’s going to be able to run away with it from the pole, but hopefully he catches lapped traffic in the wrong places and I’ll be able to get around him or catch him in some mistake even as few as he makes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I just want to thank everybody at SUPRS, all the admins, all the drivers, everybody has a hand in this,” Sears said. “I’m grateful that everyone wants to come out and hope everyone has fun. It would be nice to win the second Triple Crown Race, (Sears won the first one of the season at the SUPRS All-Star Classic 200), and it’s nice to set on the front row. Hopefully I can win it tomorrow night.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After being the fastest Rookie Qualifier last year Daniel Nans of Baldwinsville, New York won the 25 lap B-Main and will start seventh on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I feel pretty good,” said the second year SUPRS driver. “I’ve been doing some practice and I feel decent in how I did with my lapped time, and feel pretty good with the race I had in the B-Main and the race I might have tomorrow.” Nans, who finished fifth in his first Summit Classic last year, is realistic about his chances in his second Summit Classic saying, “I know I might not win tomorrow, that doesn’t mean that not everyone in front of me might crash.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave Ohh won the BMK Logistics Fast Car Dash for the SUPRS 2024 Golden State Classic series. The six lap race had one caution when third quick qualifier Anthony Corsoniti’s Californian bad luck continued and he crashed into the front stretch infield wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
