Big Crash Takes Out Leaders, Rob Warren Makes Repairs, Charges to Win<\/em><\/h2>\n

Oswego, NY – June 13, 2017…<\/strong><\/em>Rob Warren drove through adversity and had one of his greatest comebacks on the way to becoming the third driver in Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), history to win the prestigious Jim Shampine Memorial  back to back Tuesday night at Oswego Speedway<\/a> Warren relegated Bob Gangwer to second with a pass late in the race while Domenic Gioia came home third for the second week in a row.<\/p>\n

Nowhere to Go<\/strong><\/p>\n

Warren looked to be in a comfortable position just prior to the halfway point of the race when he suddenly found his comfort zone turned upside down when he and the lead pack came upon a pair of slowed cars. Nelson Rodrigues and Jeff Weber had made contact the lap before in turn one, but no yellow was thrown as they both continued. Each driver, thinking that the caution would come out, drove slowly around the track waiting for the amber lights to come on.<\/p>\n

After leading the first 38 laps leader Steve Callahan blasted out of turn four with Warren right on his tail and Keith Powell running closely in third place. Callahan saw the #7 of Rodrigues and cut hard to the left to avoid hitting him, while also missing the slow moving Weber down low. With Callahan darting out of the way, Warren was left with a clear view of the rear end of Rodrigues’ Star Speedway sponsored machine and had nowhere to go. He sliced to the left but still ripped the tails section and left body panel off of Rodrigues car, while also knocking the nose wing off of his.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Callahan lost control as the weight transferred to the left rear and sent him spinning wildly into the turn one foam as his teammate Keith Powell locked the brakes to miss Rodrigues and Warren and also slid up the track to join his teammate.<\/p>\n

Coming from the Back<\/strong><\/p>\n

When the big crash seemingly took the top three out of contention, fourth place running Derrick Backus, who had been involved in his own battle with Bob Gangwer, teammate Kyle Clark and Domenic Gioia in mid-pack, inherited the lead. Backus didn’t keep it for long though because at the drop of the green flag Gangwer shot to the outside in turn one and took off down the backstretch.<\/p>\n

Gangwer held the lead for the next 35 laps and through several more cautions while Warren somehow picked off car after car with his own badly damaged 1st<\/sup> to Finish roadster. A late race caution for Carl Becker spinning was all Warren needed as he set his sites on the now ill-handling car of Gangwer.<\/p>\n

As the two darted out of turn four with just eight laps to go, the duo struggled for traction going three-wide as they lapped Kevin Timmins who was running on the high-side. Racing down the front-stretch into turn one, the pair never touched wheels as they slid through the first and second turn. A drag race down the backstretch and Warren came out on top as they entered turn three. He held on for the rest of the way even after one last restart with two laps to go.<\/p>\n

Throwback to the Good Old Days<\/strong><\/p>\n

SUPRS takes a step back to the glory days of the famed Oswego Speedway with the 1st<\/sup> to Finish Race Servers “IrReGuLar 45” next Tuesday. This race is modeled after the weekly slate of events that made up a Saturday night at “The Home of the Supermodifieds” and is a reminder of just how tough it was to win a feature at Oswego Speedway during the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n

With heats, semi-features, and a 45 lap feature all lined up by the Points Won Handicap System, the battle for the final transfer spot in the preliminaries is sure to make for a great show.  Practice begins at 8:00pm, with the first heat race set to take the track at 9:00pm.<\/p>\n
