After Two Years SUPRS Goes Back to Lee USA Speedway for Presidents’ Day Special

Share SUPRS:

February 18, 2022 – Manchester, NH…For the first time since the 2019 New England 50, the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS) returns to Lee USA Speedway Tuesday, February 22, 2022 for the BMK Logistics Presidents’ Day Special. When the racers show up to the well-known New Hampshire speedplant, they’ll find the track a little more raceable than the last time they were there and a unique format that will be used at the request of the sponsor.

Important Track for Schedule

Because of the history of supermodified racing at Lee USA Speedway, including big-block and 350 supermodifieds, series co-founder Bob Gangwer is glad Lee USA Speedway is back on the schedule for the BMK Logistics Presidents’ Day Special. “If you are going to call yourself a supermodified sim racing sanction that exists to promote real supermodified racing to a younger crowd that is into gaming and sim racing, you’d darned well better have as many real supermodified race tracks on the schedule as you can,” he declared. “We dropped Lee because, frankly, the last, and only time we ran there, it was a horrible show. There was just no grip and it was impossible to pass.

This video from Locke Brothers Racing shows just how tough real supermodified racing at Lee USA Speedway is.

While not completely unrealistic, (Passing at Lee USA Speedway, especially in a big block supermodified, is a challenge), the virtual Lee SUA Speedway was simply not built for the speeds SUPRS was turning and not many SUPRS members were upset to see it dropped from the schedule, except for one.

“Brad had been pestering us for two years to put Lee back on the schedule, but it wasn’t until he said he would sponsor a race there that we began to seriously try to figure out how to make the track work for us. Now, thanks to Nelson Rodrigues, we’ve found a way to increase the grip levels and bring in a second groove and we think the BMK Logistics Presidents’ Day Special is going to be on par with what fans and members have come to expect from SUPRS.”

Unique Format a First for Presidents’ Day Special

The SUPRS Presidents’ Day Special is one of the longer running events on the SUPRS schedule, and for the most part, the format of the race has been the same since the first one in 2005. This year however, a unique format requested by sponsor BMK Logistics will be used for the first time in the history of the Presidents’ Day Special.

Instead of single car time trials, the drivers will post an official qualifying lap during their ten lap heat race where they will line up based on the timestamp on a weekly survey. From there, the drivers that post one of the top eight lap times during the heats will be locked into the 75 lap Presidents’ Day Special feature race and are eligible for the starting line up inversion.

That inversion will be based on the SUPRS Points Won Handicap System where the last three races that a driver has run are added up for a handicap total. The better a driver has been doing, the deeper he starts in the line up.

In one other twist, if there are less than 11 laps left in the feature race and the caution flag comes out, drivers that are less than seven laps down to the leader will be moved to the tail of the field, leaving a clear track for the those left on the lead lap.
