SUPRS Racers Head into Unknown on Blind Date Night

Share SUPRS:

December 6, 2019 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), head into unknown territory on Blind Date Night as the 2019-20 Empire State Super Series Regional Tour begins on Tuesday December 10. It’s only after Hot Laps that one of three potential tracks will be chosen for this NASCAR Heat supermodified race date.

A Championship within a Championship

The Empire State Super Series, (ESS),  is composed of anywhere between three to six races stretched out over a period of one year and two SUPRS Gold Crest Seasons. All of the races are run at tracks in the state of New York, and each time a driver competes in an ESS event he accrues points for the Regional Tour Championship as well as for the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Season Championship.

VIEW BLIND DATE NIGHT FORMAT

Of those three to six races that generally make up the annual ESS Regional Tour, one has always been a SUPRS Blind Date Night, where one of three tracks will be chosen just before the race.

This interesting twist has been a SUPRS tradition since the beginning of the sanction and, like real blind dates where you never know how things will turn out, it’s been a fun event that some drivers loathe and other drivers love.

New York Drivers Dominate ESS Championship Tally

Not surprisingly, drivers from the state of New York have dominated the overall ESS Championship since it’s inception in 2004, with nine of the previous 15 editions being won by a resident of New York.

Even more impressive is that those nine ESS championships are held by just three drivers. Ray Sand, Jr. of Rochester, NY has the most with five. Reigning ESS Champion, Rob Warren of Pulaski, NY has three, and Myles Maxon of Oswego, NY has one.

Sand, Jr. and Warren set the bar high by winning all of their ESS championships in a row.

Blind Date Night Options

Just like always, each of the three track options for SUPRS Blind Date Night are unique and challenging in their own way. All of the options this season are once again, NASCAR Heat tracks built by Mike Jackson.

The first option is the very tricky Andover Speedway. This quarter-mile, high-banked fictional track has corners where drivers dive down in at high-speed, slamming the low slung roadsters to the ground. They have to dodge the buried tires in the infield then drive back up out of the corners. Each time they do, the walls come up quick and they’ll have to master the bumps on corner exit as well.

The second potential track for Blind Date Night is Diamond Speedway. This big, wide ½ mile speed plant is another fictional track and is located in Diamond, NY. With 2 degrees of banking, but a very wide racing surface, this is seems like an easy track to conquer on first glance. Yet, the tricky, off-camber and uphill turn four is treacherous, throws the cars towards the front-stretch wall and could easily prove to be a lot harder to get around than initial appearances.

Finally, Marlboro Speedway is the third track that could be drawn for Blind Date Night. Like Diamond, Marlboro Speedway is a slightly-banked half-mile that’s nearly flat with only 2 degrees of banking. With wide straights and long sweeping turns, the drivers are turning nearly as long as they are going straight each lap they turn on this picturesque speedway.

The SUPRS racers have never had a race date at any of this season’s potential tracks. So, regardless of which track is drawn out of the hat, there will be a track record set in Time Trials and someone will go into SUPRS history as the first winner at the selected speed venue.

A SUPRS HeatFinder.net Supermodified Challenge Race

Like all NASCAR Heat races on the SUPRS schedule this year, the ESS Blind Date Night is part of the SUPRS/HeatFinder.net Supermodified Challenge.

This race is open to any driver that has registered as a website user at SUPRS.net, has the SUPRS W v6 modification, and all three tracks.

Last year, ARL HeatFinder Champion Dave Ohh, of Union, CT won on Blind Date Night after starting in sixth place at Buffalo Speedway.

Details for Date

The 2019-20 Empire State Super Series Regional Tour goes on SUPRS Blind Date Night on December 10, 2019. The drivers will speed date through all three tracks in a 15 minute Hot Lap session which starts at 8:00pm. Time Trials are at 8:30pm. The first Heat Race is scheduled to begin at 9:05pm. The 50 lap ESS Blind Date Night Feature Event should begin around 9:30pm and get everyone home in time for curfew.

Wing Side Up Twin 25s at Bristol Provide Plenty of Supermodified Action

Wing, Non-Wing Supermodifieds Take to Banks of Bristol December 3

December 1, 2019 – Goshen, IN…The racers of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), resume racing with their wing, and non-wing, supermodifieds at the 16th Annual Wing Side Up Twin 25s on the wicked fast 1/2 mile high-banks of Bristol Motor Speedway on December 3, 2019.

SUPRS 2019 Wing Side Up Twin 25s at Bristol Motor Speedway poster by BreezeGraphics.com
Everyone loves a nice set of twins almost as much as they love this Wing Side Up Twin 25s poster by BreezeGraphics.com

Two Classes, Two Sim Racing Platforms

The Wing Side Up Twin 25s have always been a challenge to win, and the event has seen fluctuation in the format since the first event was run in 2004 that add to that challenge.

After a several years of using the rFactor sim racing platform for both 25 lap features, this year drivers will do battle in the rFactor game for the wing supermodified part of the event, then switch to NASCAR Heat and their non-wing supermodifieds for the second feature. This is the first time since 2014 that NASCAR Heat will be used for any part of this race.

The racers strap into their rFactor wing supermodifieds for Time Trials and Heat Races for first Twin 25 lap feature. Then they hop into their non-wing NASCAR Heat supermodifieds, line up in a random start, and go hammer down for the second Twin 25 to see who is the best on the Bristol Banks.

View Format for the 16th Annual Wing Side Up Twin 25s at Bristol Motor Speedway on the Schedule Page.

Drivers Aiming for Bristol Bonuses

While having two points paying shows, in two different types of supermodifieds, and two different games on the same night at a treacherous track like Bristol Motor Speedway may seem to be enough of a challenge, multiple chances for extra bonus points just add to the risk/reward factor.

The SUPRS Double Down, SUPRSChallenge, and SUPRSCharger, increase the rewards, and the risks at the Wing Side Up Twin 25s.

For example:

  • The SUPRSCharger is in effect for both features. This awards ten bonus points awarded to the driver that improves the most positions from his starting place.
  • The SUPRSChallenge pays 20 bonus points to any driver that starts last and wins either feature.

The SUPRS Double Down though, is a bonus that can quickly change a driver’s fortunes. If a driver can win both 25 lap features he gets 25 bonus points added to his Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship total!

While all of those may seem somewhat easy, the Double Down has only been claimed twice, (even though Gary Waldron won both 38 lap features at the first event in 2004, there was no such thing as the Double Down). Doug Heveron and John Davidson are the only drivers other than Waldron to have won both features on the same night. Heveron doing it in 2007 and Davidson in 2012.

It’s probably no surprise, that in a quick 25 lap sprint, that the SUPRSChallenge has never been claimed at the Wing Side Up Twin 25s.

Double Details

The SUPRS racers are ready to strap in and go hammer down in their supermodfiieds for the Wing Side Up Twin 25s on the big banks of Bristol Motor Speedway on Tuesday December 3, 2019. Official practice starts at 8pm with the Driver’s Meeting at 8:30pm. The drivers strap into their winged supermodifieds for Time Trials at 8:45 and the racing begins at 9:05pm. The non-wing supermodified 25 lap feature should start at about 9:30pm.

SUPRS Racers Hunting for Burgers’ Smokehouse Award at Turkey Shoot

Winner Gets Burgers’ Smokehouse Thanksgiving Turkey

November 16, 2019 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 15th Annual Turkey Shoot takes place Tuesday November 19 at Memphis Motorsports Park. The SUPRS racers will be on the hunt for a feature win and the delicious Burgers’ Smokehouse Thanksgiving turkey that goes with it.

Coveted Prize for Winner

One of the reasons the SUPRS Turkey Shoot is a very popular race is because of the coveted prize that goes to the winner. The driver in victory lane after 40 laps receives a Burgers’ Smokehouse turkey, delivered to the doorstep in time to enjoy it with the family for Thanksgiving dinner.

As 2014 winner Carl Becker has said, “I’ll tell you what, I’ve eaten about as much turkey in my life as I have crow, and I’ve never had a tastier bird than that smoked one from Burgers’ Smokehouse.”

Even as treasured as the award is, a lot of times throughout the history who the race, the winner has chosen to donate his prize to those that are less fortunate, or are enduring hard times, making for an especially happy victory lane.

Family Traditions at Burgers

The succulent slow smoked turkey has a value of over $70 and comes from a family company that was started in 1952 by E.M. Burger in Moniteau County Missouri.

Burgers' Smokehouse logo

Bugers’ Smokehouse can trace it’s roots all the way back to the 1920s when E.M. Burger’s parents started curing hams on their local farm. Now known as one of the largest companies of its kind, the time-honored traditions of hard work and special personal touch have never been lost, to the point that, according to the Burgers’ website, each ham still starts the curing process by being hand-rubbed with a seasoning blend dating back to one developed by the family over 100 years ago.

Memphis is Home to Turkey Shoot

With this year’s race, the Memphis Motorsports Park is now tied with Tri-Park Speedway, (a fictional asphalt tri-oval in Tennessee), and has found a home along the banks of the Mississippi River.

Ray Sand Jr winner of SUPRS supermodified sim racing Turkey Shoot
Ray Sand, Jr. won the SUPRS 11th Annual Turkey Shoot sim supermodified race for rFactor.

The Turkey Shoot got it’s start at the big 3/4 mile track and for the first three years, the featured race varied in length from 63-40 laps. John Davidson won the very first show in 2005 with Chris Meyers picking up one of his first SUPRS feature wins in 2006. Florida’s Kris Heveron was the winner in 2007 in a 17 car field-the largest to date for this race.

When the race returned to Memphis in 2015, Ray Sand, Jr. became the All-Time Turkey Shoot winner when he bagged his third Burgers’ Smokehouse turkey and donated it to fellow SUPRS racer Myles Maxon who had recently lost his grandmother. The race itself went green to checkered after an aborted start and used SUPRS non-wing supermodified for rFactor; the only time that’s happened in this race.

Clark Joins 2-Time Winners Club

Last year, after enduring six restarts, in a race that had eight cautions, Kyle Clark of Mexico, NY joined Dave Biro III and Ray Sand, Jr. as the third two-time, and back-to-back winner of the Turkey Shoot. Clark had an easier go of things when he won his first Burgers’ Smokehouse Thanksgiving Turkey in 2017. In that race Clark set fast time, won the Turkey Trot Dash and led all 40 laps of the feature.

Don’t be Late to the Turkey Shoot

Hot Laps for the SUPRS 15th Annual Turkey Shoot at Memphis Motorsports Park begins at 8:15pm ET and runs until 8:30pm when the Drivers Meeting starts. Time Trials happen at 8:45pm where drivers will try to make the Fast 4 and the six lap Turkey Trot at 9:05pm to set the first two rows of the 40 lap main event. Drivers that qualified fifth or lower will run a Heat Race at 9:10pm and the 15th Annual Turkey Shoot Feature event should take the green flag at around 9:30pm.

 The Soldier
It is the soldier, not the reporter,
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.
It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves under the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.
