Track, Format Create Challenges at Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby

Share SUPRS:

January 2, 2019 – Goshen, IN…When it comes to a unique format and track, nothing tops the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby and Can-Am Challenge at Mosport Speedway for challenges. The 15th annual running of this race takes place after a two-week break from sim racing on January 2, 2019, and if history is any indication, this year’s race is going to be just as unpredictable as the previous 14.

Zaniness Starts with Format

When the racers fire up their online sim supermodifieds for the first time of 2019, they will face a format that is completely unpredictable and always provides a rousing good time north of the border.

Time Trials, the Canadian Pursuit, Heats, and a 50 lap feature will keep the racers busy all night long on a slick track that is anything but predictable as they race for extra Gold Crest Division Season Championship points that come from being on the winning Snowball Derby Championship team.

The competitors will not only be racing against each other but they’ll be paired up into two-man teams where the slowest matches up with the fastest from time trials. Each member of the team will work throughout the night to gain the most points possible as they try to win the overall Snowball Derby Challenge Championship.

Track Creates Unique Challenges

As they race for the extra Gold Crest Division Season Championship points that come from being on the winning Snowball Derby Championship team, there are several nuances about Mosport that make it a thinking man’s track.

Starting with a slick surface that offers little in the way of grip for the wide tires, Mosport’s turn one and two are virtually flat, followed by a backstretch wall that isn’t perfectly straight and juts back in toward the fast groove.

Add to that the very tricky turn four with its increasing radius, and nearly off-camber corner that tends to shoot drivers towards the outside wall upon exit, there’s no denying that a driver has to stay up on the wheel while being mindful of the tire, brake, and car preservation.

Warren, Powell Take Points Battle to Canada

Of the current top five in the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship standings, only points leader Rob Warren has won this special event.

Warren is embroiled in a fierce points battle with Keith Powell as he gets ready to run the Canuck. Just 12 points separate the two drivers that, combined, have won every SUPRS Gold Crest Championship since 2015.

While Powell has never won the Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby, last year he joined with CPR teammate, Steve Callahan, to claim the Snowball Derby Team Challenge and picked up 10 bonus points for doing so. To his credit, Warren has been on the winning Derby Challenge team twice so there could be a real dogfight in store for fans.

Good Eats from Burgers’ Smokehouse for Christmas Special Winner

Share SUPRS:

December 8, 2018…The winner of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 15th Christmas Special on December 11 at Rander Speedway can expect some good eats from Burgers’ Smokehouse in time for Christmas dinner.

SUPRS 2018 Christmas Special

Burgers’ Ham Valued by SUPRS Racers

As has been the case, nearly since the beginning of this race, a Burgers’ Smokehouse Christmas Ham is awarded to the winner* for his accomplishment. This is one of the reasons the SUPRS racers look forward to this race as much as any other on the schedule.

Burgers' Smokehouse logo

The fine folks at Burgers’ Ozark Country Hams have been providing simple traditions since 1952 when they built their first “ham house” on their farm in Missouri. With complete attention to quality and customer service, this family owned company continues to do things the old-fashioned way taking great care in the time-honored traditions of curing, aging, and smoking superior quality products.

Back to Rander Speedway

SUPRS will race at Rander Speedway for the first time since 2016 at this year’s Christmas Special. Historically, Rander was always the site of the Dion Parish Memorial, but once the rFactor sim racing platform started being used, a move to Dion Parish’s favorite track, Kalamazoo Speedway happened, and Rander was dropped from the schedule.

Rander is a fictional, high-banked, half-mile paved oval built by Mike Jackson for the DSES sim racing leagues many years ago and has always proved to be a fine track for supermodifieds.

HeatFinder.net Open Show

The 15th Christmas Special is part of the 14 race SUPRS NASCAR HeatFinder.net Open Show Challenge. This should increase the car count and add several drivers that are specifically focused on winning a NASCAR Heat supermodified sim race. This added twist of having drivers that excel at this particular sim racing platform should make the night more interesting from the aspect of the SUPRS regulars going for the Gold Crest Wing Championship, are up against some very talented sim racers.

Christmas Special Last Show of 2018

The SUPRS 15th Christmas Special is the last show before a two week break in the sim racing action. This annual break allows members the opportunity to spend time with their families during Christmas and New Year’s without concentrating on turning left in their sim racing supermodified.

More Details

SUPRS 15th Christmas Special takes place December 11, 2018 beginning with practice which starts at 8:00pm. Qualifying follows at 8:45pm and Racing gets underway at 9:05pm with the Reindeer Dash.

The Christmas Special will be availabe on SUPRS LIVE! Fans, friends and family can enjoy live commentary, interviews, and all the racing action with streaming video  via the SUPRS LIVE! page.

Double Dip of Daring for Supermodified Sim Racers at Wing Side Up Twin 25s

Share SUPRS:

Wing Side Up Twin 25s at Bristol Motor Speedway require double dip of daring and nerves from SUPRS racers

November 26, 2018 – Goshen, IN…The drivers of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), put on their bravest faces this week as they head to Bristol Motor Speedway for the 15th Annual Wing Side Up Twin 25s supermodified sim race. This event is one of the longest running in SUPRS history and while one of the favorites of the racers, it is also a show that requires drivers to dare disaster as they run sub 11 second laps on the steeply banked half-mile.

SUPRS Wing Side Twin 25s at Bristol Motor Speedway 2018 poster

The Wing Side Up Twins at Bristol Motor Speedway are bad and bodacious. But this BreezeGraphics.com poster is pure beauty!

SUPRS Co-Founder is Long-Time Sponsor

SUPRS Co-Founder Bob Gangwer has sponsored the event since it’s inception through his website Bob Gangwer’s Wing Side Up on the World Wide Web, and it’s an event that near and dear to his heart.

“I grew up watching supermodifieds on big banked tracks like Winchester, Salem, and Toledo,” explained Gangwer. “Those were the scariest, craziest, most thrilling races I ever saw because the speed was so intense and the margin for error was so slim.”

“I always wanted to bring that nerve-wracking thrill into sim racing and when we started SUPRS in 2004, Bristol was really the only track that even came close those the ones I grew up at,” he said. “Now that we’ve run rFactor, there’s some other options out there, and we’ve considered moving the race, but everyone really likes the challenge at Bristol. So I don’t see this race going anywhere as long as I’m involved.”

Big Bonuses at Bristol

Multiple bonuses like the  SUPRS Double Down, SUPRSChallenge, and SUPRSCharger, increase the rewards, and the risks at the Wing Side Up Twin 25s. As drivers vie for valuable Gold Crest Wing Championship points in two short 25 lap features, they might come out ahead, or could fall further behind in the points chase.

For example:

  • The SUPRSCharger is in effect for both features. This awards ten bonus points awarded to the driver that improves the most positions from his starting spot.
  • The SUPRSChallenge pays 20 bonus points to any driver that starts last and wins either feature.

But the Double Down  is a bonus that can quickly change a driver’s fortunes. If a driver can win both 25 lap features he gets 25 bonus points added to his Championship total!

While all of those may seem somewhat easy, the Double Down has only been claimed twice, (even though Gary Waldron won both 38 lap features at the first event in 2004, there was no such thing as the Double Down). Doug Heveron and John Davidson are the only drivers other than Waldron to have won both features on the same night. Heveron doing it in 2007 and Davidson in 2012.

Nobody has ever won the SUPRSChallenge at the Wing Side Up Twin 25s.

Two Types of Supermodifieds

Once again this year the SUPRS racers will need to excel at driving both wing and non-wing supermodifieds if they want to take home a good finish. The winged supermods race first and are certainly thrilling. But it’s the non-wing supers, with less downforce, and drag, that tend to be the more unpredictable car of the night. Adding to the edginess of the event is the second feature with the non-wing supermodifieds takes the green flag in the early evening and uses a random draw to set the starting line-up.

More Details

The SUPRS racers are ready to double the action and double the fun on the big banks of Bristol Motor Speedway  on Tuesday November 27, 2018. Official practice starts at 8pm with the Driver’s Meeting at 8:30pm. The drivers strap into their winged supermodifieds for Time Trials at 8:45 and the racing begins at 9pm. The non-wing supermodified 25 lap feature should start at about 9:30pm.

Tune In and Hang On

Supermodified and online sim racing fans and friends can savor the double dip of daring challenges facing their favorite supermodified sim racing daredevils with SUPRS LIVE!. Featuring all the action fans can handle through a computer screen, there’s live streaming video, timing, scoring and track telemetry to enjoy. But don’t blink, because at these speeds, you might just miss the 15th Annual Wing Side Up Twin 25s at Bristol Motor Speedway!

First Time Since 2015 for SUPRS to Race at New River Valley Speedway

October 12, 2018 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), returns to New River Valley Speedway October 16, 2018 for the Old Dominion 50 lap NASCAR Heat supermodified sim race October 16, 2018.

Used to be Regular on Schedule

From 2005, to 2015, New River Valley Speedway was a regular haunt on the SUPRS schedule for the wing supermodifieds. Through those years, SUPRS staged at least one race a year at the Radford, VA 1/2 mile. Most of those races were the popular President’s Day Special which ranged in length from 38-75 laps.

Bud Flath, Jr. won the first SUPRS race contested at New River Valley Speedway in 2005 and Ray Sand, Jr. won the last SUPRS race at New River Valley in February of 2015. In between drivers like Myles Maxon, Chris Meyers, Chad Phelps also have at least one win there.

Callahan Has Most Wins at NRV

Steve Callahan of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, and SUPRS most recent winner at the Bluegrass 50 rFactor race, has the most wins at New River Valley. His tally of four victories at New River includes three in a row from 2012-2014. His first came in 2009 and only John Davidson, Ray Sand, Jr. and Dave Biro III, with two wins each, come close to “Steady” Steve’s record.

Old Dominion 50 is Part of NASCAR Heat Supermodified Challenge

The Old Dominion 50 is part of SUPRS 14 event NASCAR Heat Supermodified Challenge which is open to the public. At the first race of this special ‘season within a season,’ the 15th Annual Harvest of Speed, several first time supermodified sim racers made for a great show. It’s a safe assumption that these drivers, with their vast NASCAR Heat experience, will also be threats to win here as well.

Old Dominion Details

SUPRS 15th Anniversary season of supermodified sim racing continues with the Old Dominion 50 at New River Speedway on October 16, 2018. Practice begins at 8:00pm, with the Drivers Meeting taking place at 8:30. Time Trials follow at 8:45pm and Racing begins with the Fast Car Dash at 9:05pm. The full race format and schedule of events is available on the SUPRS schedule page.
