Independence Day Twins Keeps Celebration Going for Extra Day

July 1, 2016 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), will celebrate America’s Birthday party one extra day with the running of the Independence Day Twin 35s on July 5 at Oswego Speedway.

BreezeGraphics.com makes it easy for SUPRS celebrate freedom and supermodified sim racing.

The Independence Day Twins event is the oldest on the SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship calendar and returns after year hiatus. This year’s show also makes for the second week in a row that the SUPRS competitors will be running the double feature format.

The very first points race for the SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodified Championship came on July 6, 2005 with the running of the Independence Day Twin 25s at Jennerstown Speedway. Californian John Davidson and Canadian Sean Gibbs won those races.

Since then, the event has been held at Jennerstown Speedway two other times. Beginning in 2008 the race moved to the newly designed Oswego Speedway and has been held there since except for 2011 when it ran at Bristol Motor Speedway and 2012 and 2015 when the event was not held.

While the format has changed from Twin 25 lap features the first year to Twin 40s and even Twin 45 lappers, since 2010 the supermodified sim racers have battled each other in Twin 35 lap contests. However, this year will be the first time the Independence Day Twins will use the rFactor platform. All previous renditions have used NASCAR Heat.

In the history of the race, no driver has more wins than 2-time Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion Kris Heveron. Heveron won at least one of the Twin features starting in 2006. He then swept the 2007 event which featured twin 45 lap races,  and won the second feature in 2008 for an impressive three-year run of four total wins. Heveron remains the only driver in SUPRS history to sweep the two features. No driver has ever had a perfect night of winning his heat and both features.

Other winners include Gary Waldron (2006), Dave Soja (2008), Devin Gee and Dave Biro III (2009), Steve Callahan and Domenic Gioia (2010), Dave Biro III and Dave Soja (2011), and Domenic Gioia and Steve Callahan again in 2013, and Myles Maxon and Chris Meyers in 2014.

After a year off, the Independence Day Twin 35s return to Oswego Speedway on July 5 and will again feature a unique and interesting format based on the points won handicap system. As has been the long-standing tradition of the Independence Day Twins, a SUPRSCharger award and SUPRSChallenge bonus award available for each 35 lap feature.

This event has always been an important one for the SUPRS racers because of the points available and with just 33 points separating the top four in the Championship standings, fans can bet that this edition will be no different.

Current Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodified Champion Rob Warren has won two races this year and for two weeks in a row was on his way to standing on the top spot again when disaster struck. Crashing in two out of three features run, he has taken a huge hit in the points and dropped to third overall.

The big mover up the points ladder was Steve Callahan. Callahan won the second

Steve Callahan held off a hard charging Myles Maxon in the second Twin 35 at Oswego Speedway in 2013.

Mid-Season Championship Twin 35 last week which helped him claim the overall Mid-Season Championship and the ten bonus points that go with it, catapulting him three places from fourth overall to the top of the heap and P1. Callahan has done well in the past having won a feature in 2010, 2013.

Callahan’s teammate, Keith Powell, is yet to claim a feature win, but with two third places finishes last week, has positioned himself in second overall in the Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship and sits just eight points behind his CPR Motorsports partner, Callahan.

Fourth place in points is Bob Gangwer. Like Powell, he hasn’t won a feature, but has finished second in half of the races run and until last week, was in the top three in points.

Three time Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion Ray Sand, Jr., after winning a feature for the second week in a row last Tuesday, has finally cracked the top five in the point standings after several DNF earlier in the season. His constant struggle with an aging gaming rig leaves many unknowns surrounding his chances of having a good run this week.

Twin 35s, Double Points Highlight SUPRS Mid-Season Championship

Share SUPRS:

June 27, 2016 – Goshen, IN…The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), is already at the halfway point of the Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship Season and the SUPRS racers are now setting their sights on a Mid-Season Championship Crown.

SUPRS 2016 Non-wing supermodified sim racing mid-season championship poster

BreezeGraphics.com doubles the promotional power of your events with posters like this!

With a full slate of action featuring time trials, heats, Twin 35 lap features and double points as well as bonus points for the driver crowned Mid-Season Champion, and SUPRSCharger for both features, the action is sure to be intense at Oswego Speedway on Tuesday, June 28..

This season SUPRS will  crown their Mid-Season Champion with Twin 35 lap feature races at Oswego Speedway in a format identical to the Gold Crest Wing Season where the top eight finishers of the first feature will be eligible for the handicap of the second, and consistency over the course of all the night’s events will pay huge rewards.

Current SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship point leader and defending Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion, Rob Warren has had a fantastic first half of the season. Warren has taken his 1st to Finish Racing roadster to two wins and hasn’t been off the podium except for last week in the race his company sponsored. A rare instance found him crashed against the turn 3 foam after contact with Kevin Timmins. The incident dropped him to eighth place, but he was able to keep up his points lead when nearest challenger Bob Gangwer finished just two spots better.

SUPRS 2015 Non-Wing Mid-Season Championship top 3 first feature

Steve Callahan picked up the win in the first Twin 35 of the Mid-Season Championship.

Defending SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion Steve Callahan has been a “Steady” top five finisher, and is now tied for third place in the points after a great run last week in the 1st to Finish Race Servers “IrRegular 45.” He will now try to improve upon his best season finish thus far which was a third at the Jim Shampine Memorial as he attempts to defend his Mid-Season Championship crown and advance in the standings.

The driver suddenly on the move is Keith Powell of Carrollton, OH. Powell has steadily improved his finishing position to a current season high of second last week, and is now in second place in the points. The quick 35 lap races could hurt him though as his set-up takes a while to come in and he won’t have the luxury to wait on Tuesday night.

The 2014 Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion, Domenic Gioia has worked hard to get comfortable in his new racing rig and his effort was clear last week when placed third. His points handicap should put him near the front in a qualifying heat race and that could be his best asset in his quest to become a two-time Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion.

Domenic Gioia crosses stripe for Mid-Season win at Oswego Speedway

Domenic Gioia held off a hard charging Myles Maxon to take the win in the SUPRS Mid-Season Championship at Oswego Speedway.

All of these drivers will have to be wary of the hard charging, perennial SUPRS Champion, Ray Sand, Jr. “The Sandman” has not had a great season so far showing three DNF in the stats, but with a  win last week and a total of seven Mid-Season Championships, (counting the Gold Crest Wing season as well), he is considered the favorite to grab the double points for winning as well as the bonus points for being crowned Mid-Season Champion.

If Sand, Jr. is able to pull off his third Non-Wing Mid-Season Championship, he would become the first SUPRS racer to do so. Sand, Jr. is tied with John Davidson (2006, 2010 Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion), and Kris Heveron ( 2007-08 Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion), for most wins in this important event. Jim Crannell (2005), Devin Gee (2009), and Domenic Gioia (2014), are the only other racers to have scored Mid-Season Championships for the Non-Wing season. There was no race held in 2013.

“The Rabbit” Joe Achzet is still looking to put a check mark in the win column this season and even though still out of the top five in points, has shown moments of great speed and seems to have a car that is especially good in short runs like this week’s races.

Achzet is one of the drivers hanging out between third to eighth in the standings with the most to gain, or lose, on Tuesday night. Those drivers are separated by just 104 points total and includes the 2016 Port City Kick-Off winner Clinton Cyr.

Potential spoilers could be 2010 SUPRS Silver Crest Non-Wing Champion Derrick Backus and current Icings on Top Rookie of the Year points leader Kyle Clark. The two have consistently improved each week and as part of the three-member, (along with Chad Phelps), Disturbed Motorsports team, they have been able to share set-up information which has helped them each time they have raced.

The SUPRS 12th Non-Wing supermodified sim racing  season continues on June 28 with the running of the Mid-Season Championship at Oswego Speedway. Official Practice starts at 8:00 pm with the green flag dropping for racing action at 9:00 pm.

SUPRS Remembers a Legend with Jim Shampine Memorial

Share SUPRS:

Goshen, IN – June 3, 2016…If there’s one race that online supermodified sim racers most like to check off their must-win list, it is the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Jim Shampine Memorial.

SUPRS Jim Shampine Memorial poster 2016

Respecting and remembering a legend thanks to BreezeGraphics.com

Honoring supermodified builder, racer and innovator, the late Jim Shampine, this SUPRS event is one of the longest running and most prestigious on the SUPRS schedule.

Jim Shampine was a seven-time Oswego Speedway Champion that not only won more feature events at Oswego Speedway, (87), than any other driver, but also has three Oswego Speedway International Classic 200 wins to his name, is a two-time winner of the Star Speedway International Classic 200, helped found and was the 1977 International Supermodified Association champion and is known as the father of the modern radical off-set supermodified.

Prior to his death in the 1982 Modified 200 at Oswego Speedway, Shampine’s legacy was already well established and continues on to this day as one the one most talked about in all supermodified circles across the country.

As has been a tradition in years past for this race, the 8th place finisher will receive a special award to be announced on race night.

The SUPRS version of the Jim Shampine Memorial is now in its 11th year and while all have been good races, several in that span stand out as instant classics. We took a moment to look at eight of the most memorable best Jim Shampine Memorial races:

  • #8-2012: In the only time in the history of the race, the Jim Shampine Memorial was shorted to 75 laps for this year. After finishing in third place the year before, Dave Biro III claimed his first and only Jim Shampine Memorial.
  • 2010 Jim Shampine Memorial SUPRS Weekly#7-2011: After his Jim Shampine Memorial win in 2010, John Davidson went on to claim his only SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when he entered the 2011 season as a favorite to claim another Shampine Memorial as well as the Championship. He battled with a determined Ray Sand, Jr. for nearly the entire 80 lap distance but was able to hold him off for the win to become the second two-time winner and second back to back winner in this event. Sand, Jr. went on to win the Championship that year, and it wouldn’t be the last time he figured into an exciting finish for the Shampine Memorial.
  • #6-2014: After a bad time trial run that forced him to take the green flag from sixth starting position, Maxon proved to be too “Mighty” for early race leader Rob Warren when he made the pass for the lead and win on lap 50. After chasing up to the rear nerf bar of Chris Meyers, Maxon worked with Meyers to close the gap on Warren. Suddenly Meyers lost connection and was out of the race ending his bid for the win. Meanwhile Warren looked well on the way to his first Jim Shampine Memorial win but Maxon slowly closed the gap. After staving off repeated challenges by Maxon, Warren made one small slip and it was just enough to allow Maxon to become the first three-time winner of the race.
  • SUPRS Weekly June 11 2008#5-2008: A stout field of 20 other online racers showed up and after starting in seventh position and dueling with Kris Heveron throughout most of the race, Myles Maxon became the first two-time winner. The race was held for the first time at the recently completed SUPRS Oswego Speedway for NASCAR Heat built by Doug “Flash” Forgue.
  • #4-2007: Defending SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion, Myles Maxon, is one of only two multi-time winners, and none of his wins have come easy. Maxon’s first win in this race came early in his SUPRS career in 2007. After qualifying 14th, finishing last in his heat and starting next to last in the 16 car field, he methodically steered clear of on track altercations that took out many of the favorites, kept his car clean and won after 80 laps at Jennerstown.
  • #3-2006: The largest field to ever start a Jim Shampine Memorial race was 22 cars at the first one held in 2006 held at Jennerstown Speedway. “Dandy” Dave Soja was one of six different leaders of that memorable race, (the most ever in a Shampine Memorial), and led 44 of the 80 laps to win over Jim Crannell and Sean O’Kane. Soja’s win is notable, because it was his first ever feature victory in SUPRS competition.
  • #2-2009: After winning back to back SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Season Championships in 2007-2008, but neverSUPRS Weekly June 10 2009 having been able to claim a race that meant so much to his family, Kris Heveron came out swinging in 2009. Kris is the son of Shampine protegé’, “The Young One” Doug Heveron and from the time he went into the server on race night 2009, he left no doubt that he was going to be tough to beat. When the dust settled, he had finally won his first Jim Shampine Memorial and speechless in victory lane.
  • Ray Sand, Jr. (18) brought home his first SUPRS Jim Shampine Memorial 80, narrowly beating Myles Maxon(79).

Ray Sand, Jr. (18) brought home his first SUPRS Jim Shampine Memorial 80, narrowly beating Myles Maxon(79).

#1-2013-There was one race that Ray Sand, Jr. hadn’t won in his incredible SUPRS career that he coveted more than any other. The Jim Shampine Memorial had eluded him for various reasons in years past, but this year he was on a tear, having surpassed John Davidson as the All-Time Winner in SUPRS history during the Gold Crest Wing Championship season. His win in 2013 goes down as the closest in SUPRS Jim Shampine Memorial history and came after an intense battle with Myles Maxon throughout the race. “Let me tell you, after winning just about everything else, this one means a ton, especially doing it while holding off Myles for most of the race, then right at the line. Anytime you can do that and win in this league it means a lot, but winning against a field like this and with it being the Shampine Memorial, it’s all the more special.” said Sand, Jr. after the win.

The SUPRS 11th Annual Jim Shampine Memorial 80 will feature the best online supermodified sim racers on Tuesday June 7, 2016. The SUPRS Race Server will open at 7pm for an hour of testing, with Official Practice starting at 8pm.  Then at 8:45pm the drivers will all attempt to set a new track record at the SUPRS version of Oswego Speedway and the Elite 8 qualifiers will be locked into the feature event. At 9:00pm heat races will qualify the rest of the field of 20.
