Big Points Shake Up Possible at SUPRS Mid-Season Championship

Share SUPRS:

July 7, 2023 – Goshen, IN…A big points shake up is possible at the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Mid-Season Championship on July 11 at Oswego Speedway.

The 2023 SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodified Mid-Season Championship could seriously shake up the championship points battle on July 11.

A Lot of Points Available

With a tight battle raging in the overall SUPRS Gold Crest Championship XIX for the non-wing supermodifieds, there’s a lot on the line at this race. Not only will the drivers try to add their name to the list of former Mid-Season Champions, but they’ll also be competing for DOUBLE championship points along with a plethora of bonus points each time they hit the track.

Double Points for the feature have many drivers hoping to seize the opportunity to make a jump in the point standings, or gain a little cushion in the close contest that covers, specifically, the top five in points, but also has a tight grouping from sixth to tenth, in the championship.

But it’s not just the double feature points that are up for grabs. Again this year, drivers will be gunning for the overall Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodified Mid-Season Championship. The driver that accumulates the most combined points for his heat race and feature race finish receives 15 bonus points when he’s crowned the Mid-Season Champion.

Other bonus point awards are available during the night including:

  • SUPRSCharger – Feature (10 points paid to the driver that advances the most places from his starting spot)
  • Lap Led – Feature (One point paid to each driver that leads a lap in the feature)

Championship Battle Very Close

Through the first five races, there’s been four different winners, making the championship battle very close. So close in fact that Zach Sears, the current points leader is only 89 points ahead of Brad Keysor and Ryan Cloonan who are tied for fifth overall. Looking a little further back, Gary Waldron is only 127 points behind Keysor and Cloonan and sits in 10th place of the SUPRS Championship.

After his win at the Independence Day Twin 35s, (his first SUPRS championship points paying victory), Anthony Corsoniti is second behind Sears and just 49 markers back. Sitting in third, Bob Gangwer is 39 points behind Corsoniti and 79 out of the lead with the Keysor, Cloonan duo just 10 points behind him.

All but one driver in the top five is looking for his very first SUPRS Championship, with Keysor being the only driver to have scored a SUPRS crown.

Keysor Aiming for Third Mid-Season Championship in a Row

As a two-time and defending SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodified  Mid-Season Champion, Keysor is one of the odds on favorites to take the win at Oswego on Tuesday.

Brad Keysor won his second SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Mid-Season Championship in a row last year. He’ll be looking to make it three.

Already in good company as a two-time and back to back winner with the likes of Kris Heveron, (2007, 2008), Ray Sand, Jr., (2011, 2012), and Steve Callahan, (2015, 2016), if he can pull off the Mid-Season Championship by accumulating the most points for the night, he’ll join Rob Warren at the top of the heap for the most Mid-Season Championships total, and in a row, at three.
