Oswego, NY – July 30, 2013…Bob Gangwer took advantage of his pole starting position to jump out front and lead all 75 laps bringing his WingSideUp.com, Pabst Blue Ribbon Special home for the win in the 2013 edition of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series “Mr. Online Supermodified” race. By virtue of the win, Gangwer becomes a guaranteed starter for the season ending Topless! 200 race.
Gangwer joined Kris Heveron as the only back to back and repeat winner in the race’s six-year history, but had his hands full holding off first Chris Meyers, then Myles Maxon. “Let me tell you something,” Gangwer began, “This is unfamiliar territory here for me, first leading and then being able to win. I never do well at Oswego and if it hadn’t have been for starting up front, I doubt that I’d be sitting here in Victory Lane talking about a win.”
“I knew that to have any chance at all I had to get out front early and I was lucky enough to get a good start over Meyers. From then on, I just figured it was a matter of time before I was going to get passed, but I didn’t so I kept my line and once we got to lapped traffic, really worked hard to time it and plan the pass so I didn’t get messed up,” he said. “I don’t run with my splits so I had no idea who was back there, I just knew someone was on my tail for the race and know that I know who it was back there, I have to thank Chris and Myles for racing me clean and not blasting me to make a pass and thanks to everyone for coming out to support SUPRS.”
Maxon was able to make his way up to second and nearly pulled off a win after starting in eighth spot on the feature grid. “I really had to pick my way through in the beginning and took advantage of a poor start by a couple of other guys,” said the driver of the Tamrack Golf Club machine. “I think Chris and Steve had some problems with a lapped car and that’s all I need to be able to get by them and chase Bob down.”
“I threw everything in the book at him to get the win, but I wasn’t going to take both of us out trying to get by him, so I just waited and hoped for an opening, but there just wasn’t enough to make a clean pass. So second again, but I’ll take it and hats off to Bob, he did what he had to through traffic and ran a clean race,” said Maxon
“Crazy” Chris Meyers pulled off a podium finish after a few DNF this year, but still wasn’t completely happy with his run saying, “I was just biding my time waiting for the car to come in and I got up to a lapped car and Bob went high so I tried to follow and all the sudden the lapped car moved up into me. From then on the car was shot and all I could do was watch as Myles drove by and pulled away to challenge for the win.”
Cayuhoga Falls, OH resident Steve Callahan came home fourth while current point leader Ray Sand, Jr. of Rochester, NY struggled all night with computer issues but hung on for a top five.
SUPRS is back in action next week August 6, 2013 with “The Whistler 63” Pete Trenca Memorial where another Topless! 200 guaranteed starting spot is up for grabs.
