Orlando Speedworld Winner Steve Callahan Off to Great SUPRS Speedweeks Start

Orlando, FL – February 9, 2015…Steve Callahan charged past Dave Brigandi on lap four and never looked back on the way to winning the opening salvo of the 2015 SUPRS Florida Speedweeks swing at Orlando Speedworld. Myles Maxon and Ray Sand, Jr. finished in second and third place over one second back.

Steve Callahan Orlando Speedworld winner

“Steady” Steve Callahan opened Speedweeks with a win Monday night at Orlando Speedworld.

“The car was awesome and I had a great start,” began the quiet, thoughtful winner. “ I got behind Dave (Brigandi) and I think he bogged down a little big and I was able to cross him over and take the lead, but he sure ran a good race.”

“Once I got by Dave I was able to run a higher groove and pace myself. The car was too good and it was running so good that I was having too much fun and didn’t want to deal with any lapped traffic so I was trying to pace myself.

“The car was just perfect, what a great way to start Speedweeks,” said Callahan

Second place finisher, Myles Maxon moved from sixth starting spot following seventh place starter Ray Sand, Jr. through the pack of SUPRS racers. Maxon the current SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship points leader said, “Ray kinda made it easy for me as he was making holes and i was scooting along with him. actually from that aspect i have to thank him a lot for it. I’ll definitely take second.”

Maxon turned the fastest lap of the race but came up short on laps once he made his way to second. “I needed a few more laps,” he began. “We reeled Steve in there a little bit, but his car was just good here tonight. It’s one thing to catch him and it’s a whole other thing to get past him. I’ve said it time and time again they don’t call him “Steady” Steve for nothing so congrats to Steve on a great race.”

Third place finisher Ray Sand, Jr. was unavailable for comment but fourth place finisher Bob Gangwer simply said, “Really, it was a blast out there tonight. Congratulations to Steve, he flew by me like I was sitting still and Dave ran a great race too.”

Last years winner Carl Becker claimed fifth place and stated, “It was a fun race, I didn’t finish where I wanted, but like Myles said everyone was  running so doggone fast and so close that catching them is one thing, passing them is another. So congrats to Stevo on the win and we’ll see everyone tomorrow night.”

Dave Brigandi, started from the pole, finished sixth and may have led just three laps, but he held onto second place for nearly half of the race, making him pleased with the way the night turned out. The driver of the Buffalo Bio Fuels machine said, “The car was excellent. I was losing grip about half-way through and then Myles and Ray and Bob got by me, and then Carl, but I had a great run there even at the end. I want to apologize to Rob as I got into him pretty good towards the end, but I had a good time and want to say congrats to Steve on the win.”

The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series now moves just down the road to Black Creek Raceway for night two of the 2015 SUPRS Florida Speedweeks Swing for a 25 lap affair at the big 3/4 mile.
