Steve Callahan Crowned SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Mid-Season Champion
Oswego, NY – July 14, 2015…Steve Callahan and Rob Warren were able to use their front row starting places to nail down wins in the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Twin 35 lap features that were part of the Mid-Season Championship for non-wing sim supermodifieds.
Callahan won the first race with Warren coming home second. In the second feature the two swapped places with Warren winning and Callahan coming across the line in second.
“The car was just good. I can’t get a lightning fast set up in it, but I’ve got a consistent one in it,” stated Callahan. “It’s cool, I needed runs like this after the last two weeks. We were tearing up a lot of race cars the last two weeks, but tonight Team CPR had a good night. Thanks to everyone for coming out and sticking it out and congratulations to Rob for winning the second race.”
“Glad to finally win one,” began Warren. “I just got a great start in the second one and being able to run in the clean air, it was just a nice easy clean run. Hats off to Steve on his win he did a great job.”
While he may have had an easy go in the race he won, the one he didn’t was a bit more challenging. Warren said of the first feature, “The first race was amazing sitting there in third hanging out trying to snooker Keith. I finally got a nose under him when he tried to get by his teammate, (Callahan), and we ran side by side down the backstretch and it was a blast. Then I set my sights on Steve but I couldn’t close to more than a half of a second from him and then just like the real track that aero push came into play and I just slid up the track.”
Callahan’s near perfect feature runs and a better heat race finish gave him enough points for the night to claim the SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Mid-Season Championship. “This is pretty cool to be able to do this,” he said. “It’s something that after all of these years, I can finally add to my accomplishments.”
Keith Powell was the model of consistency as well, gaining valuable championship points after finishing in third place both races. He spoke about his runs afterwards saying, “It was a good night, like Steve said. Getting those cars back up on the podium, it helps our confidence. I was hoping Steve would start getting tired in that second one and that I could get up to him to challenge him but it wasn’t to be.”
Powell, who has suffered from illness the last several years, paused then added, “I really appreciate everyone that comes out to race and everyone that puts this on. I didn’t know two years ago, I didn’t think I’d ever be doing this again then when I came back I figured I’d start scratch every feature so I wouldn’t be a hindrance to anyone. By luck and the grace of God I’m able to sit down and push the pedals a little bit again. Congrats to Steve and to Rob on their wins tonight.”
Heat race wins went to Keith Powell and Joe Achzet.
SUPRS will take a one week break so members may travel to the 38th Annual Hy-Miler Supermodified Nationals which is the first leg of the Supermodified Triple-Crown and will be held at Sandusky Speedway. The International Supermodified Association will compete for two days and many SUPRS members are on race team crews.
SUPRS next race will be the two-day 8th Annual Mr. Online Supermodified spectacular that this year will be a part of the Xtreme SUPRS Challenge Championship. Drivers will have to be consistent and fast using both wing and non-wing supermodifieds in order to claim that coveted Mr. Online Supermodified Crown and win the special trophy being presented by 1st to Finish Docks & Hoists.
The first race of this special event takes place on Monday, July 27 on the Xtreme Short Track Sim Racing server using the JCR/Gott 2015 Wing Supermodified on the JCR version of Oswego Speedway. Then the very next night on Tuesday, July 28 the action will move to the SUPRS Race Server for non-wing supermodified racing using the SUPRS NW V1 rFactor mod and the SUPRS Oswego Speedway track.
Both feature races will be 75 laps in length and points will be kept for time trials, heat races, and the feature races to determine the 8th Annual Mr. Online Supermodified. Each sanction will keep their own points that go towards their season championships and finally, as race four and five of the six race Xtreme SUPRS Challenge, points will also be tallied for that series over the two nights.
