Great Sim Racing Action Expected at SUPRS Buckeye 50

Share SUPRS:

January 13, 2019 – Goshen, IN…Supermodified sim racing fans can expect close, fast, nail-biting action when the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), visits Mansfield Motorsports Park for the “Buckeye 50” on January 15, 2019.

2018 Show Filled with Action

The 2018 Buckeye 50 was a race that was filled with action from the drop of the green flag. Pole-sitter, Chad Phelps, was the star of the show early in the race. Holding back Rob Warren and Keith Powell, Phelps looked to be headed for the win until he looped the car and crashed into the inside wall on the backstretch.

It was then Warren’s turn to show the way around the big, banked racetrack, holding off an ever-challenging Powell and Phelps’ teammate Kyle Clark. However, Warren, like Phelps lost control of his supermodified and spun around coming out of turn two, albeit, with less damage.

It was the the Powell, Gangwer, and Clark show and for the last 10 laps of the race, the trio looked high and low as they struggled to find traction and an advantage on each other.

In the end, Powell used former leader Phelps to his advantage as a lapped car and was able to hold Gangwer and Clark at bay, finishing just .308 of a second ahead at the drop of the checkers.

The 2018 Buckeye 50 had a finish that you just have to see to believe. See it in the video below:

Strong Field Expected for 11th Terry Gibson Memorial

Share SUPRS:

January 4, 2019 – Goshen, IN…A strong field of determined competitors is expected to compete for the prestige of winning the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 11th Annual Terry Gibson Memorial January 8-9, 2019. This race pays tribute to real supermodified racer Terry Gibson, who lost his life while competing in a supermodified race in 2008 at Toledo Speedway.

Big Race Big Guns

Because of the prestige of the race and also because, this year, it is part of the SUPRS/HeatFinder.net NASCAR Heat Supermodified Challenge, organizers are expecting one of the most competitive fields of sim racers seen at this race in a while. Several of the most skilled NASCAR Heat sim racing drivers in the country have already indicated that they are interested in competing, so this two-night extravaganza of sim racing could prove to be one of the best yet.

15-Time ARL Champion-Dave “SpeedyMan” Ohh, along with Jeff “Grumpy” Bivens, Rick ” BlackKnight” Walls, and Henry “Bandit” Kay are just a few of the HeatFinder.net regulars that will likely compete for the honor of winning this memorial race at SUPRS.

Keene Coming Back

Frank Keene, of Scranton, PA has recently decided that he is coming back to SUPRS racing after about a five-year abscense. Keene was one of the first sim racers to become a SUPRS Member way back in 2005 and is second only to Steve Callahan when it comes to drivers with the oldest original SUPRS join date that will hit the track for the Gibson Memorial.

Paying Tribute to Terry Gibson

SUPRS Terry Gibson Memorial remembers and honors the late Terry Gibson who lost his life during a heat race for the Midwest Supermodified Association at Toledo Speedway on July 18, 2008. Gibson was part of one of the first families of the real supermodified division and was competing in his own car at the time of his death.

Terry is survived by his wife Linda, son, Ryan W. Gibson; a daughter, Lindsay N. Kincaid; his father Todd Gibson, two brothers, Gene Lee (Lucinda) Gibson, Sandusky; Larry (Lisa) Gibson, Marysville; and a sister, Deb (Randy McElroy) Brady, Richwood. Terry was followed in death by his brother Jeff (Shannon) Gibson in 2012, and mother Brenda in 2018.

Hard Race to Win

From the first race run in 2009, only four drivers have won this challenging event, so it’s no exaggeration to say that the Terry Gibson Memorial is not only one of the most sought-after victories on the SUPRS schedule, but also one of the toughest.

Myles Maxon was the first driver to win the race more than once. After winning the inaugural race in 2009, and being beat by Californian John Davidson in 2010, Maxon came back to win in 2011.

Ray Sand, Jr. was the next driver to win the race more than once doing so in 2012 and 2013. Those two wins set him on a path to an incredible four wins in a row. Sand, Jr. could be called “The King of Sandusky” as the 9-Time SUPRS Champion also has three wins in the Terry Gibson Fast 50.

Bob Gangwer took the lead from Rob Warren with 30 laps to go for his first and only win to date in 2016, but Warren came right back in 2017 and last year to join the two-time winner’s club.

Close Calls for Callahan

Last year, veteran SUPRS pilot Steve Callahan finally picked up a feature win at Sandusky Speedway after trying since 2005. Callahan looked to be the favorite going into the 100 lap show the next night but was outdone by his teammate and fellow “Buckeye” Keith Powell and eventual winner Rob Warren.

In all, there have only been two times in the last six runnings of the race that Callahan hasn’t stood on the podium after 100 laps. In fact, for three years running, (2013-2015), Callahan had victory in his grasp only to fall victim to lapped cars with just a handful of laps left and had to settle for second place.

Track, Format Create Challenges at Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby

Share SUPRS:

January 2, 2019 – Goshen, IN…When it comes to a unique format and track, nothing tops the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby and Can-Am Challenge at Mosport Speedway for challenges. The 15th annual running of this race takes place after a two-week break from sim racing on January 2, 2019, and if history is any indication, this year’s race is going to be just as unpredictable as the previous 14.

Zaniness Starts with Format

When the racers fire up their online sim supermodifieds for the first time of 2019, they will face a format that is completely unpredictable and always provides a rousing good time north of the border.

Time Trials, the Canadian Pursuit, Heats, and a 50 lap feature will keep the racers busy all night long on a slick track that is anything but predictable as they race for extra Gold Crest Division Season Championship points that come from being on the winning Snowball Derby Championship team.

The competitors will not only be racing against each other but they’ll be paired up into two-man teams where the slowest matches up with the fastest from time trials. Each member of the team will work throughout the night to gain the most points possible as they try to win the overall Snowball Derby Challenge Championship.

Track Creates Unique Challenges

As they race for the extra Gold Crest Division Season Championship points that come from being on the winning Snowball Derby Championship team, there are several nuances about Mosport that make it a thinking man’s track.

Starting with a slick surface that offers little in the way of grip for the wide tires, Mosport’s turn one and two are virtually flat, followed by a backstretch wall that isn’t perfectly straight and juts back in toward the fast groove.

Add to that the very tricky turn four with its increasing radius, and nearly off-camber corner that tends to shoot drivers towards the outside wall upon exit, there’s no denying that a driver has to stay up on the wheel while being mindful of the tire, brake, and car preservation.

Warren, Powell Take Points Battle to Canada

Of the current top five in the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship standings, only points leader Rob Warren has won this special event.

Warren is embroiled in a fierce points battle with Keith Powell as he gets ready to run the Canuck. Just 12 points separate the two drivers that, combined, have won every SUPRS Gold Crest Championship since 2015.

While Powell has never won the Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby, last year he joined with CPR teammate, Steve Callahan, to claim the Snowball Derby Team Challenge and picked up 10 bonus points for doing so. To his credit, Warren has been on the winning Derby Challenge team twice so there could be a real dogfight in store for fans.

Join SUPRS in Canada

SUPRS 15th Annual Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby and Can-Am Challenge take place on January 2, 2019, at Mosport Speedway. Practice starts at 8:00 pm. Time Trials are at 8:30 pm, after the Drivers Meeting and Racing gets underway at 9:05 pm with the Canadian Pursuit.

Heats and the Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby 50 lap feature follow the pursuit for lots of fun, fast, and frenzied supermodified sim racing action.

SUPRS fans and friends can follow all the Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby action including streaming video, timing, scoring and instant track telemetry via the SUPRS LIVE page. This live broadcast from Mosport Speedway starts at 9:00 pm est and is a fun, family-friendly place for everyone to celebrate the start of a new supermodified sim racing year.

Christmas Time, Break Time for SUPRS

Share SUPRS:

December 14, 2018 – Goshen, IN…Here at the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), we believe that Christmas is a very special time of year. In this day and age of  of an ‘always on’ and ‘constantly connected’ world, we also think it’s the best time of the year to take a break from supermodified sim racing. So we’re putting supermodified sim racing on hold for a couple of weeks.

SUPRS Merry Christmas banner 2013

Christmas Break is Important

We want to remind all of our SUPRS Members, fans, friends, family and business partners, that our annual 2-week Christmas Break begins at the close of business on Friday, December 14, 2018 and lasts until Wednesday, January 2, 2019. We feel this time away from sim racing is important and hope that our members have plenty of time to travel and spend time with family.

Since the beginning of SUPRS in 2004, we have stressed the importance of family and we believe that focusing on that is more important than #simracing. and it’s what sets us apart from other leagues or sanctions.

SUPRS urges all of members, friends, fans, & followers to take this time to disconnect from racing on the web, put down their cell phones, and shut off the internet to focus on the important things in life.

Submitting Join Forms

Sim racers wishing to go supermodified sim racing with SUPRS can still submit their Membership Join Forms during our break. However, we want to remind everyone that Join Forms won’t be processed until we are back in the office after the New Year on January 2, 2019.

This also means that Member’s Only Access won’t be available to new members until after January 2, 2019. We’ll do our best to get any new members set up and ready to race the 15th Annual Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby, so if you DO submit a Join Form during break, please make sure that you have done everything on your part to be ready to race. You can learn more in our F.A.Q and rFactor Quick Start Guide.

General Emails and Press Releases

We will continue to watch our email for time sensitive press releases from supermodified sanctions, tracks, and teams to decide if any are of a time sensitive nature. General email processing is on hold until January 2, 2019.

PR representatives should contact us via our Contact Page if they have something very important that needs to go out immediately on SUPRS.net. Otherwise, all incoming email from PR departments is considered bulk mail and those releases will be added to our website upon our return to business.

Heading to Canada When We Resume

After the first of the year, it’s time to get ready for the 15th Annual Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby at Mosport Speedway. We’ll fire up the SUPRS Race and TeamSpeak servers at 6:00 pm on January 2, 2018. for this race.

SUPRS Members can plan on an extended Systems Check prior to the race and should be prepared to run SUPRS Sync beginning at 6:00pm. Race times remain the same and can be found on our Schedule Page.

Merry Christmas to All

Thank you to  all the SUPRS Members, sponsors, friends, fans, and followers that supported SUPRS in 2018. We appreciate your passion for sim racing, SUPRS, and more importantly REAL supermodified racing.

We want to wish all of you a wonderful Christmas season filled with peace, love, health and happiness. May every joy and blessing be yours at Christmas time and throughout the New Year.
