Change in Format, Laps, Points, Presents New Challenges at Mid-Season Championship

Share SUPRS:

January 22, 2023 – Goshen, IN…A change in format and feature lap length will present new challenges to the  racers of The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), that pull into “The Home of the Supermodifieds” on January 24 for the Mid-Season Championship at Oswego Speedway.

Lots of challenges with extended feature lap length and a new format await the SUPRS racers looking for a big points night January 24 in the SUPRS Mid-Season Championship at Oswego Speedway. (Poster by BreezeGraphics.com)

Extended Feature Laps

The Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Mid-Season Championship is jam-packed with a full-night of supermodified sim racing including Time Trials, the BMK Logistics Fast Car Dash, and Heat races. All of the preliminary events will help set the starting grid of the 75 lap Feature event.

The last time the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Mid-Season Championship was 75 laps was in 2013

This will be the first time since 2013, and just the fourth time in the history of SUPRS, that the drivers have run more than 35 laps in a feature to determine who is crowned the Mid-Season champ. It’s also the first time the rFactor sim racing game will be used for a feature of the length for the winged supermodified Mid-Season Championship.

The last time SUPRS ran a 75 lap feature for the winged supermodified Mid-Season Championship at Oswego, Bob Gangwer won the race. Prior to that, Chris Meyers, (2011), and Rob Warren, (2012), won a 75 lapper. All three of those races were contested using the NASCAR Heat sim racing platform. So not only will the lap length be a challenge, the change in game could also throw a curve ball into the mix.

Change in Format

For the last 10 years, and for most of the time the race has been in existence, the SUPRS Gold Crest Mid-Season Championship for wing supermodifieds has had the Twin 35 format. In this format drivers time trialed and ran a dash, or heats, to earn a place on the the first 35 lap feature grid. Then for the second feature of the night, the starting line-up was an inverted start of the first feature’s finish.

At the end of the night, the points from the heats and the two feature would be added and the driver with the most would be crowned the Mid-Season Champion for the Gold Crest Wing Supermodified division.

While drivers will still time trial and run the preliminaries, this year the way they line up for the preliminaries is different, and the points paid for Time Trials, the BMK Logistics Fast Car Dash, and Heat Races have changed. Drivers will try to qualify into the “SUPRS 6” so they can run the dash and earn points in that season-long challenge, as well as have a shot at starting in the first three rows of the feature.

If they don’t make the dash, they go straight to a heat race where their finishing position determines where they start behind the “SUPRS 6” in the 75 lap feature. The twist here is, both the dash and the heats will be lined up according to SUPRS Empire State Super Series season long handicaps. So a combination of time trialing well, overcoming a handicap starting spot, and then finishing well, is always going to be on the drivers mind. In other words, going fast and finishing first has an added emphasis for this race.

Points, and More Points

Once they are in the feature, the real fun begins! For the first time in the history of the race, and SUPRS, passing points will be paid for every position a driver gains over his starting spot in the feature. This means the drivers will fight for points all night long from the time they hit the track for time trials, through earning as many passing points as they can, to the checkered flag in the feature event.

The driver that ends up with the most total points overall, (the sum of all finishing points of all events plus passing points for the feature), will go home as the Mid-Season Champion and have ANOTHER 15 bonus points added to his season championship total!

And with this race being a part of the year-long Empire State Super Series Regional Tour, they’ll earn points towards that championship as well.

Points-

Finishing Position  (FP) Points Shall be Paid for Time Trials, Dash/Heats and Feature Using Special Points Schedule HERE

Passing Points (PP) Shall be Paid for Feature

Total Points (TP) Shall be Paid towards SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Season Championship total.

ESS Regional Tour Points Shall be Paid (standard SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Season Championship Points Schedule for feature, (85 for first 75 for second, 70 for third and so on), shall be added to a driver’s ESS Regional Tour Points total).

Further Points Explanations

Finishing Points(FP):

Drivers receive FP based on special Mid-Season Championship points schedule and their finishing order in Time Trials, Dash/Heat Race and Feature.

Drivers also receive FP based on standard SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Season Championship Points Schedule and their finishing position in the Feature.

Passing Points(PP):

Drivers receive PP based on how many spots they advance during the Feature.

Drivers receive 4.0 points per spot advanced from starting position to finishing position.

PP are awarded ONLY for total spots advanced/lost. PP are not awarded for every pass made(ie – passing a car dropping back then passing a car again will not award multiple PP)

Starting position is determined by the way the cars line up on the front stretch prior to the start of the Feature and is not necessarily the same as the posted lineup. (ie – a car scheduled to start on the pole of the Feature and not making the call, would not automatically mean all other cars get 4.0 PP. It would result is a resetting of the field)

A driver electing to take the tail or a spot other than his assigned starting spot will not be eligible for PP. This is to prevent drivers from abusing the system. They still will receive the appropriate FP for their finishing spot. The same will go for a driver who does not Time Trial or finish the Dash/Heat.

Total Points(TP):

TP are the sum of a driver’s FP for Time Trials, Dash/Heat and Feature plus PP.

Drivers will be ranked in order of the most Total Points.

Driver with most Total Points will be deemed the 2022-23 Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Mid-Season Champion
