Kyle Perry Wins Dasera, Rob Warren Takes Orange County Victory for Night 1 of SUPRS North Carolina Swing
October 19, 2021 – Rougemont, NC…A chaotic night of supermodified sim racing to kick off the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS) 18th Annual North Carolina Swing, found Kyle Perry in victory lane at Dasera Speedway for the second year in a row, while Rob Warren came back from a disastrous race at Dasera to claim the win at Orange County Speedway.
Perry Steers Through Carnage for Win
Fulton, NY racer Kyle Perry was content to ride in second place behind Keith Powell at Dasera, and did so for most of the first half of the 40 lap affair there. But on lap 21 that all changed when he inherited the lead after Keith Powell clobbered a stalled Carl Becker on the front-stretch. That crash started a chain reaction that claimed not only destroyed Powell’s chance at a win after leading 15 laps, but also wiped out Rob Warren, and Gary Waldron as victims. Bob Gangwer, Greg Breen, Bobby Hayduk and Danny Ray were also involved in one form or another, but were able to continue.
Somehow, the 2021 Oswego Speedway 350 Supermodified Rookie of the Year as able to pick his way through the chaos and carnage to take over the top spot.
“You know I’ve always gone by the saying in racing that “I’d rather be lucky than good any day and that’s what I was tonight,” Perry said. ” I just saw those guys wrecking there so you just kind of poke, and you hope you go where they’re not. I was definitely a second place car. Keith was gone and I don’t think I would have been able to catch him.”
Perry, driving the Orange Crate Brewing, Bellinger Auto Service #02, qualified into the Elite 8 and made him eligible for the feature inversion. Perry found himself starting on the outside of row 2 and followed Powell by outside front-row starter Anthony Corsoniti, then Bobby Hayduk who led the first five laps.
Takes a Liking to Dasera
The young racer has taken a liking to the fast but tricky track that has been on the North Carolina Swing for a long time. He said, “Dasera, I don’t know what it is, I’ve just taken a liking to it and I’ve run pretty good there the last couple of years. A track like that is fun because slower is faster, and it just makes you have to drive the car.”
“I just want to thank everyone at SUPRS for putting this on for us, it makes the long winter go by a little faster,” he concluded.
Other Dasera Notes
Bob Gangwer was third for the second year in a row, with current point leader Dave Ohh fourth and Steven Vincent in for fifth at the treacherous 3/8 bowl.
10 of the 14 starters finished the race with only half of them on the lead lap at the end. Earlier in the night, Keith Powell could find some solace in an otherwise dismal Dasera race by knowing he set fast time with a lap of 11.264 seconds.
Warren Overcomes Disastrous Dasera to Win at OCS
Three-time North Carolina Swing Champion, could have easily called it a night after registering a DNF in the first race at Dasera, but found himself smiling after starting from the pole and leading all 40 laps at Orange County Speedway.
Warren was happy to have made it back to victory lane and now, not counting The Hickory Hustle, has 11 overall feature wins during North Carolina Swing competition. He chalked his victory up to having a little help from some friends and was never really nervous about leading the race. “Actually I wasn’t really nervous because the first 20 laps I was cheering for Gary Waldron who was running second and I was able to build up a lead,” he said. “Then I saw it switch to Dave Ohh, (in second place), and I was like “uh-oh Dave ooh.”
Knowing that he had no buffer between himself and the reigning SUPRS Champion, at a track were they tangled last year, Warren had to come up with a new strategy to keep “SpeedyMan” at bay. “I figured I could lose a tenth of a second a lap and be up 3/10ths at the end,” said the 1st to Finish Race Server driver. “I as watching my line and started to hear my spotter saying, “that’s your best lap” so as i coasted more and more, and got the car more under control, my lap times got lower as I slowed down and I got the gap up to about 2.8 seconds.”
“Thanks to BreezeGraphics,Hairbag studios, Icings on Top and Bobby G. for making this fun enough for me to keep coming back every year,” Warren said.
Lapped Car Trouble-Again
It was the second time in three years that a driver has led all 40 laps from the pole at Orange County Speedway. That may sound like it’s easy to win at the Rougemont oval, but Warren lays no claim to that statement, and after getting wiped out in a crash started by one at Dasera, Warren was none to pleased. “Typically the lapped cars are really good, tonight, there were idiots,” he said. “With 15 to go I caught a bunch of lapped traffic, but I felt like there wasn’t any big rush so I backed it down,” he explained. “One of them caught the outside wall, I got by him, then the two cars in front of me started hitting each other. Those two guys in front of me did nothing but try to wreck each other. I got by one, and he slammed into the back of me like he thought he was racing me for position.”
Warren ended up winning by nearly two seconds over Dave Ohh, while Keith Powell, last year’s winner here, like Warren rebounded and found himself in third at the end of the race. Kyle Perry finished out a good first night of the swing with a fourth and Gary Waldron had a fine run to finish fifth.
Warren was the fastest qualifier with a lap of 11.053 seconds.
Two Qualifying Races Left
The 2021 North Carolina Swing continues tomorrow with qualifying races three and four. The first stop of the night is at Southern National Motorsports Park in Kenly, followed by a full event on the 1/2 mile tri-oval at Concord Motorsports Park in Midland.
Both tracks will host 50 lap rFactor supermodified sim racing features for the SUPRS racers as they try hard to stay in the top eight in NC Swing points. Last year, Dave Ohh swept both races. Practice for both races begins at 7:30pm with racing slated to go at 9:05.
Hoping to Make the Hickory Hustle on Thursday
The swing finishes off at Hickory Motor Speedway on Thursday, October 21. The top eight in points after the four qualifying races will be invited to “The Hickory Hustle” where the driver sitting in victory lane after 75 challenging laps, will be crowned North Carolina Swing Champion.
