Ryan Cloonan Wins the Cherry Breaker 63 at Madera Speedway for First Career Feature Win

April 26, 2021 – Madera, CA…“Rapid” Ryan Cloonan, the sensational rookie driver from Oswego, NY, picked up his very first Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), feature win at the Cherry Breaker 63 at Madera Speedway. Cloonan led a race high 60 laps, and turned in the fastest lap of the race while topping Bobby Hayduk, Danny Ray, and Dick Schuler who rounded out the field. The special invitation only race for drivers that had never won before got the ball rolling for SUPRS 17th Annual Summit Classic Week as the series finishes up it’s 2021 Gold Crest Winged Supermodified Championship season.

Feels Good to Win

Cloonan, the driver of the Simability #13, has been close to a win all season long during his rookie year, but couldn’t quite put it together, so taking the victory in the Cherry Breaker to close out his season was a relief. “You know it feels pretty good to finally get a win under my belt,” he said. “I hope I can keep the momentum going into the next season, and actually pull one off during the season.”

The winner had a good time throughout the race and complemented his fellow competitors saying, “The race was good. Everybody drove nice and clean, and I didn’t have to deal with anyone driving rough. It’s been a pleasure racing with SUPRS, and I hope to keep on doing it here.”

Cloonan’s skills at handling a sim racing supermodified is all the more admirable considering that he has to use hand controls to compete. “Thanks to Simability, because without them I wouldn’t be able to race. I’m a paraplegic and Simability is a company that produces sim controls specifically for sim racing,” he explained. “They make it so that mostly anybody with a disability can drive. Check them out at Simibility.com and hopefully they can help you out, or help someone you know.”

NASCAR Heat Game Growing on Cloonan

While not his favorite sim racing game, Cloonan is starting to see the fun that NASCAR Heat can provide and has steadily improved this season. “It’s slowing growing on me,” he said. “It’s definitely a different challenge, but I’m starting to get the hang of it, and I think it’s something that’s starting to be more fun.”

The likable racer led all but three laps and also had the fastest lap of the race.

Rookie of the Year Award Presented

Keith Powell, representing his wife Cyndi, who was feeling under the weather, presented Ryan Cloonan with the Icings on Top Rookie of the Year Award prior to the start of the racing events. Cloonan, who will finish the 2020-21 Gold Crest Winged Supermodified Championship Season in the top five graciously accepted the award and thanked Icings on Top and the Powells for all they do for SUPRS.

The race put the wraps on a great season of co-sanctioned events by SUPRS, HeatFinder and The Mod Squad. Final results of the SUPRS/HeatFinder supermodified challenge that began back in October of 2020 with the Harvest of Speed will be up after Summit Classic Week draws to a close Wednesday.

Go Fast Night on Tuesday

On Tuesday, all focus switches to going as fast as possible at the 17th Summit Classic Pole Night.  Drivers will compete on a brand-new rFactor version of “The West Coast Home of the Supermodifieds” when they fight for the front row of the Summit Classic 125. Just the top two qualifiers are locked into the Summit Classic. If they don’t make the front row, they’ll be headed for the qualifying Heat Races.

Practice for the pole starts on Tuesday 4/27 at 8:00pm. The drivers take to the track at 9:05pm for single car time-trials and the run for the Summit Classic 125 pole. The qualifying heat races will follow at approximately 9:15pm.
