Bob Gangwer, Ray Sand, Jr. Split Wins at SUPRS Copper World Classic XII presented by Kern Motorsports
Avondale, AZ – March 1, 2016…Bob Gangwer won the wing supermodified part of the SUPRS Copper World Classic XII presented by Kern Motorsports while Ray Sand, Jr. brought home the non-wing supermodified victory and was crowned Copper World Champion at Phoenix International Raceway.
Sand, Jr. followed Gangwer across the line in the winged supermodified race and Rob Warren stood on the podium in both features.
Ray Sand, Jr. set a New Track Record in the non-wing supermodifieds, stopping the clocks with an amazing 22.335. Sand, Jr also qualified fastest in the wing supermodifieds at 22.791.
For Gangwer, it was his first win at Phoenix since he won the 2010 SUPRS Copper World Classic. This is pretty cool to get back in victory lane here at PIR,” began the Goshen, IN racer. “The pill draw was critical and that helped, but I really had a good car. Thanks to Curt for sponsoring this race, I wish he could have been here.”
“The non-wing car wasn’t horrible, but those guys really had something tonight, especially Ray and Clinton, so I’m OK with a fourth,” Gangwer said.
Sand, Jr. had his hands full in the wing supermodified feature, battling Rob Warren and Steve Callahan for most of the race, but had fun nonetheless, “I”ll tell ya what that was a lot of good racing, both shows,” he said. Sand, Jr. also had a great battle in the second race with SUPRS rookie Clinton Cyr. “I’ll tell you what,” Sand, Jr. began, “Clint was there the whole race and he put the pressure on. I thought I was hooked up, but man, he had a good car and I was really impressed with his driving.”
Rob Warren had another good SUPRS Copper World Classic and was on the podium in both features. “In the wing show I was running second and just kept watching the 25,(Gangwer) pull away, and then Ray got me on the last lap with a great pass,” said Warren.
“My car just took too many laps to come in the non-wing race and Ray drove around me like he was shot out of a cannon early,” Warren explained, then added, “Clint had an awesome pass on me, it was fun watching him race Ray and he did a great job out there tonight.”
Clinton Cyr of Hudson, FL made his first supermodified sim racing start with SUPRS and enjoyed himself. “Well first, I would like to say thank you for a great race, that was a lot of fun,” he stated. “Thank you to Rob for sharing that set up. I actually thought I had a shot to win there when I got around Ray, I wasn’t expecting him to come right back by on the bottom, that was good racing.”
Steve Callahan’s only highlight of the night was his heat race win and after two previous podium finishes at the Copper World Classic, had a rough night this year.
The SUPRS racers head back across the country to Pennsylvania where they will spend the three-nights running the 11th Annual Keystone Nationals from March 8-10. This popular multi-race swing will feature a 50 lap race at Harrisburg Speedway, 50 lap feature at RT 93 Raceway and will close with the 12th Annual Randy Witkum Memorial 125 at Jennerstown Speedway on Wednesday March 10.
