Dave Ohh Wins Both Supermodified Features at SUPRS Copper World Classic XVI presented by Kern Motorsports

March 31, 2020 – Avondale, AZ… Dave “SpeedyMan” Ohh continued his domination of supermodified sim racing by sweeping both features of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS) Copper World Classic XVI presented by Kern Motorsports & the JP Memorial West Coast Supermodified Reunion at Phoenix International Raceway. His SUPRS rivals watched him drive into victory lane for the fifth and sixth straight time in as many races, and could only shake their heads in wonder as he easily won the Copper World Classic Championship for the second year in a row.

Former Copper World Classic Champion, Nelson Rodrigues, finished two seconds behind Ohh for second place in the winged supermodified feature, while Derrick Backus finished over 7.5 seconds arrears to the winner in for second place in the non-wing supermodified 25 lapper. Brad Keysor was Mr. Consistent and claimed third in both feature races.

Winner Started Deep

“This feels great,” Ohh said after winning the winged supermodified feature. The TMS Wolfpack racer, who ended up in sixth starting place after the feature inversion, related that the win may have looked easy but getting to the front was a challenge, even though it only took five laps. “It was a tough night getting to this point, there was a lot of hard racing getting here. “Thankfully I had a fast enough car. was good enough to squeak by tonight.”

Ohh had a feeling the non-wing race would be a little harder to win. “I knew it would be a bit tough starting further back in the field and these non-wing cars are a little more dicey,” he said. “I had the car working good on the outside and was able to get out front and get some good laps in.”

Still, it wasn’t all smooth sailing, as he nearly crashed while passing Rob Warren and Keith Powell who had their own meeting of the minds in turn one.” I had a bit of a kerfuffle early working the outside, of Keith and Rob I think, but was able to get it gathered up without too much damage.”

“Thanks for 1st to Finish race servers Icings on Top, Hairbag Studios, Kern Motorsports, Breeze Graphics, and SUPRS for putting on these great events,” he concluded after becoming the first driver in SUPRS history to win more than one non-wing supermodified feature at Phoenix.

Bounty on Ohh

After winning the first feature of the night, the SUPRS Bounty was placed on Ohh for winning his fifth feature in a row. With two former Copper World Classic winners on the front row of the second race, (Bob Gangwer and Keith Powell), and SUPRS All-Time feature win record hold Rob Warren starting in front of him, it looked like one of the “bounty hunters” would collect some bonus points.

Much to the dismay of his fellow competitors, Ohh zoomed past Derrick Backus on lap five to take the lead and only the only time the others caught up to him was when the caution came out on three occasions.

So instead of another driver collecting 10 bounty points from Ohh’s championship total, Ohh himself added five bonus points for another win and the bounty was increased by five for the next race and is now worth 15 points to the first driver to beat him.

Ohh, with 12 wins in 16 starts this season, isn’t horribly concerned about anyone taking his points. “This season for me, I’m more focused on wins instead of the points,” he said. “So for now, I’m just concentrating on wins. Maybe next year I’ll be able to compete full time and go for the championship.”

Perry Returns to SUPRS

Kyle Perry, of Fulton, NY returned to SUPRS competition for the first time since 2015. Perry, who is took time off to go to college as well as compete in dirt modified racing, as well as iRacing competition, finished ninth and tenth in the features. Perry felt right at home driving the Brandon Bellinger #02 which is the same number he will use when he competes in the 350 Small Block Supermodified division behind the wheel of a former Bellinger car at Oswego Speedway.

Other Notes

Both Copper World Classic features had 12 entrants which is the third time this season that SUPRS has seen that many drivers start the feature. The other race with 12 was the President’s Day Special at New Hampshire, another mile-long track.

Drivers were hitting speeds of 173 mph through the dogleg all night long in both types of supermodifieds. Keith Powell, however, topped them all when he turned in the fastest speed of the night when he was clocked at 200 mph in his non-wing supermodified.

Dave Ohh, Brad Keysor, and Rob Warren swept the top three places in time trials for both races. Ohh was fastest in both, setting a new track record for non-wing supermodifieds with a 21.292 second lap. Keysor was second quick and Warren third in both sets of time trials. Keith Powell and Derrick Backus swapped fourth an fifth quick between the two shows.

Nelson Rodrigues and Ohh won the winged supermodified, eight lap heat races, both of which had false starts and multiple caution flags.

“Steady” Steve Callahan may have found himself upside down again, (it was the second time in the last three races), in his heat race, but he came back strong after starting in the fifth row in race one and the fourth row in race two, to finish fifth in both features.

Derrick Backus was pleased with his second place finish in the second race noting that, “I’ve just had a lot of bad luck lately. Some of it mine, some of it because of others, some of it because of computer glitches, but it feels good to finally get back up front.” Backus was the only driver besides Ohh to lead in the non-wing feature.

Icings on Top Rookie of the Year shoe-in Zach Sears led the first five laps of the winged supermodified feature and showed great improvement against the more seasoned veterans on this very fast track. He ended up in tenth place after a late race scuffle and then wound up finishing sixth in the non-wing race.
