Double Header of High Banked Thrills Await SUPRS Racers at Winchester and Salem

November 25, 2023-Goshen, IN…After a 10 day break to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday, a double header of high-banked, high-speed thrills await the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), racers at the 20th Annual Wing Side Up Twin 25s on November 28, 2023. The drivers will take on two of the world’s most iconic 1/2 mile paved oval race tracks, starting the night at “The World’s Fastest 1/2 Mile” – Winchester Speedway in central Indiana, then heading to the equally famous high-banks of The Salem Speedway in southern Indiana for a double-header of supermodified sim racing action.

Two Separate and Complete Shows

Wing supermodifieds will battle on the banks in two separate and complete racing events that will test the nerve and skill of every driver competing. Both races count towards the overall, season-long Indyana Supermod Challenge Regional Series. Time Trials and the BMK Logistics Fast Car Dash. The preliminary action at each track is capped off by a 25 lap wide-open, flat out speed-fest of a feature, making for a thrill-a-minute night of rFactor supermodified sim racing that you won’t want to miss.

This double-header of supermodified sim racing spectacular pays homage to the past when both tracks were regular stops for non-sanctioned supermodified racing in Indiana. The supermodifieds were a site to see, often running without wings and mixed in with sprint cars.

The running of the 20th Annual Wing Side Up Twin 25s also marks the first time in the history of the sanction that SUPRS has competed at Winchester Speedway, a track that is feared as much as it’s loved and has always separated the men from the boys with more than it’s fair share of hair-raising, open-wheel, open competition supermodified races throughout it’s storied history.

From 1975 the Cardinal 50 has rear-engine supermodifieds competing against sprint cars and roadsters. It was a common occurrence and helped add to the lore and legend that is Winchester. (Video from Hodiusdude Channel of SpeedVision rebroadcast of Bud Lindemann’s show “Car and Track”)

Risk versus Reward All Night

From the time the drivers hit the track for Time Trials in their winged supermodifieds at Winchester Speedway, to crossing the finish line for The Salem Speedway feature, there’s twice the amount of risks but double the rewards, but only if they can survive the torrid pace, and potential for crashing on the high-speed half-miles.

Not only are regular points awarded for time trials and feature finishes, along with standard bonus points for Fast Time, Lap Led, and New Track Record, but this format also includes special bonuses for both features. The SUPRS Charger, (10 points to the driver that advances the most places from starting place), SUPRS Challenge, (20 points to a driver that starts last and wins), and Double Down, (25 bonus points if a driver wins both features), are all up for grabs. For the record, the last time a driver swept the Wing Side Up Twin 25s was in 2012 when John Davidson claimed both winged supermodified victories at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Indyana Supermod Challenge

While there are a lot of regular season championshp points up for grabs, the Wing Side Up Twin 25s at Winchester and Salem are also part of the expanded 2023-24 Indyana Supermod Challenge, (ISC), Regional Tour where the overall winner of the series takes home 20 extra bonus points.

The ISC began in October at LaPorte Speedway, and finishes in March at Indianapolis Raceway Park with a double-header, wing and non-wing supermodified spectacular. Dave Ohh is the defending champion of the Indyana Supermod Challenge, but missed the first race of the tour at LaPorte where Zach Sears won his first SUPRS Harvest of Speed and grabbed the early ISC points lead.

Sears is seven points ahead of Indiana native Bob Gangwer, with SUPRS veteran Gary Waldron in third, 13 points out of the top spot.

With two extremely challenging tracks known for not only great racing, but also big crashes, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will come out of the Wing Side Up Twin 25s with the Indyana Supermod Challenge points lead, and survival may just be the key to it all.
