Final Race of SUPRS Winged Supermodified Sim Racing Season Pivotal to Outcome of Championship
April 21, 2024- Clovis, CA…As the engines to roar to life for the final race of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), season, when the checkered flag falls on the SUPRS 20th Annual Summit Classic 125 on April 24 at Madera Speedway multiple champions of speed and endurance will be crowned for SUPRS historic 20th Anniversary. This pivotal event marks not only the final race of the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship XX but also serves as the thrilling second leg of the 2024 SUPRS Triple Crown of Supermodified Sim Racing, presented by Icings on Top, and for the first time in the history of the race, the conclusion of SUPRS 2024 Golden State Classic series.
The Challenge of Victory
Winning a SUPRS race at Madera Speedway is a feat that few have achieved. In the 19 previous contests of the Summit Classic 125, only eight drivers have experienced the glory of victory lane. Of those eight, only three have won the race in consecutive years. John Davidson, Ray Sand, Jr. Bob Gangwer, with Sand, Jr. taking three of his record total five victories coming in consecutive years.
It’s a race that demands the perfect blend of skill, precision, and a touch of luck. This year will be especially challenging as drivers are still trying to figure out a new tire and engine that was released back in November. Both will have to be well managed if a driver hopes to make it to the checkered flag after 125 challenging laps at Madera.
A Testament to Real Supermodified Racing in the Golden State
The Summit Classic 125 is more than just a race; it’s a testament to the enduring legacy of the Golden State Classic series. Madera Speedway, now revered as the “West Coast Home of the Supermodifieds,” was an integral part of this series, gracing the schedule in 1972, 1973, and 1975. It was on this very track that legends like Johnny Brazil and Howard Kaeding made history with their remarkable victories during the hey-day of real supermodified racing.
The SUPRS 2024 Golden State Classic is a seven race supermodified sim racing series that pays homage to the thrilling Golden State Classic and Gold West Classics of the early to mid 1970s. Dave Ohh has dominated the series and only has to start the Summit Classic 125 to lock down the overall points championship in this special California challenge.
Cherry Breaker, Time Trial Draw and Practice Monday
Scheduled for Monday, the invitation only Cherry Breaker 63 is a race for drivers that have never won a SUPRS feature event of 25 laps or more. This NASCAR Heat race currently has nine drivers that are eligible to race, and at least four of them will have to affirm their intent to run or the race will be canceled. The night is tentatively scheduled to begin with Hot Laps at 8pm. The drivers will also draw for their practice groups and Time Trial order for the week on Monday. If the Cherry Breaker is canceled due to lack of interest from eligible drivers, practice and a 25 lap B-Main simulation will take place.
Revving Up for Pole Night: The Gateway to Glory at Madera Speedway
On Tuesday at 8:35pm, best supermodified sim racers in the world will let it all hang out in the ultimate search for speed and glory on Pole Night for the 20th Annual SUPRS Summit Classic 125. The top six drivers from Time Trials are locked into the big 125 lap race with just the two fastest drivers securing the front row of the starting grid. Those two drivers plus the remainder of the SUPRS 6 from Time Trials will do battle in the six-lap BMK Logistics Fast Car Dash. and 25-lap B-Main (if needed) will follow. The Summit Classic has been won from the Pole Position 11 times and from no worse than sixth starting place, so starting up front is key. Special Time Trial points will be paid based on the 1974 Golden West Classic Points Schedule with 48 points available for fast time as opposed to only 12.
Last year Dave Ohh of Union, CT sped to his fourth straight pole position for the SUPRS Summit Classic 125 and with his main competition, Brad Keysor not able to compete, Ohh is the odds on favorite to claim a fifth straight Summit Pole Position. Ohh and Keysor have had a virtual lock down on the front row at Madera since 2019 with only Rob Warren breaking their domination.
20th Summit Classic on Wednesday
On Wednesday, April 24, the 2023-24 20th Anniversary Gold Crest Wing Supermodified season draws to a close with the 20th Annual Summit Classic 125 at Madera Speedway. The challenging race at “The West Coast Home of the Supermodifieds” has been won by just eight different drivers in the previous 19 versions of the race.
Practice is scheduled to begin at 7:35pm with the green flag dropping on the Summit Classic 125 starting field at 8:40pm.
Last year Brad Keysor battled Dave Ohh for most of the race then used a lapped car as a pick and made a daring three-wide pass for the lead. Keysor went on to become the third different SUPRS driver to win three Summit Classic 125 main events.
The Final Push for Championship Glory
As the 20th SUPRS winged supermodified sim racing season reaches its climax, the battle for the championship points has intensified. Brad Keysor, leading the standings by a mere four points, will not be present to defend his position, leaving the door wide open for Zach Sears, who trails just behind in second place and is the reigning 2023 SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion. The points race is razor-thin, with Anthony Corsoniti holding a fragile two-point lead over Ryan Cloonan, while Dave Ohh is 35 points adrift. Not to be outdone, Bob Gangwer is only 14 points behind Ohh, making every lap and every point crucial as they vie for the prestigious Golden State Classic championship and the overall season title.
Triple Crown of Supermodified Sim Racing Up for Grabs
Adding to the pressure of just finishing the big race, is the fact that it’s also the second race of the 2024 Triple Crown of Supermodified Sim Racing presented by Icings on Top. To date, just four drivers have won the Triple Crown which also includes the SUPRS All-Star 200, and the Topless! 200 for non-wing supermodifieds. After winning the SUPRS All-Star Classic 200 earlier this season, Zach Sears will be fighting hard to win at Madera and move one step closer to his first career Triple Crown.
Ray Sand, Jr. was the first driver to take the Triple Crown in 2011. It took six years before Rob Warren became the second. Brad Keysor joined Sand, Jr. and Warren with a “perfect” Triple Crown by winning all three races in the same calendar year. in 2021.
In 2020, Dave Ohh had won all three of the races but never in the same season. That all changed in 2022 when he claimed his first “perfect” Triple Crown.
Then last year in 2023, and after a torrid battle at the end of the 19th Annual Summit Classic 125 with Dave Ohh, Brad Keysor became the first driver in SUPRS history to win the Triple Crown of Supermodified Sim Racing more than once.
Triple Crown Winners:
- Ray Sand, Jr.: 2011*
- Rob Warren: 2017*
- Brad Keysor: 2021* 2023*
- Dave Ohh: 2022*
