Fatigue No Issue for Ohh, Dominates at Desoto Wins Speedweeks Opening Night

Dave Ohh Repeats at Desoto Super Speedway after 17 Hour Drive Home, Claims First Feature of SUPRS 2022 Florida Speedweeks

January 31, 2022 – Bradenton, FL…Fatigue from a 17 hour drive home from the 60th Annual Rolex 24 at Daytona was no issue for Dave Ohh, as he dominated for the second year in a row at Desoto Super Speedway. Ohh’s hustle home to Connecticut was well worth it, as he brought home the win in the opening round of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 2022 Florida Speedweeks. The rest of the top three was a repeat of the year before when SUPRS paid their first visit to the 3/8ths in Desoto, with Brad Keysor in second place and Ryan Cloonan third.

Tired but Happy Winner

A dedicated racer to be sure, Dave Ohh was determined to make it home in time to race his virtual supermodified, but was exhausted after the race. “I’m beat. I’d like to think I could attribute the mistakes to that and not just running out of talent,” Ohh declared from Desoto’s victory lane.

Starting in seventh, the TMS Wolfpack driver took the lead on lap four with a bold outside move on Rob Warren. But even after he had built a four second lead over Brad Keysor, who had dispatched of Warren just a few laps after Ohh, the winner knew the one driver he had to worry about was Keysor. “Brad had a missile,” Ohh continued. I think in a few more laps he would have had me because I was just missing my marks and about wrecked it sending it in too hard, but it was only 50, (laps), and not 100.”

Ohh was happy to see a much cleaner race that last year here. “I was glad to see it go green,” he said. “I think everyone is getting accustomed to the track more and just driving better. Everyone is faster, closer. It was a great race.”

“I just want to thank 1st to Finish Race Servers, Icings on Top, Hairbag Studios, BreezeGraphics.com, and thanks to James and Team Goon Squad for helping out tonight, it was nice to have him back,” Ohh said. “Of course I can’t forget The Mod Squad and HeatFinder.net. I’ll miss the Thursday show because of a prior commitment to HeatFinder where I’ll be running my Legends car.”

Two Cautions Contribute to Attrition

Unlike last year’s race here where it took over 40 minutes to finish a race that had 15 caution periods, the 2022 feature at Desoto moved along quickly. Just two cautions slowed the action, but those cautions did contribute to a high attrition rate in a 50 lapper that saw just half of the field take the checkered flag.

The first yellow on the 3/8 semi-banked oval at Desoto came on lap eight when Steven Vincent, who had started from outside of row one, lost control coming out of turn two and looped the Creative Assistant #28. Vincent kept the car off the wall but found himself stalled in the middle of the track facing oncoming traffic.

Anthony Corsoniti went high, while Bob Gangwer dove low to miss him. Then Nelson Rodrigues narrowly escaped disaster when he cut to the left at the last second. Unfortunately two-time Florida Speedweeks Champion Keith Powell couldn’t move quick enough and drilled Vincent’s car head on. The two machines then spun around wildly with many of the pieces flying into the air. Both were done for the night.

13 Not Lucky for Warren or Ray

The race then went green until 13 laps to go when Rob Warren, driving the 1st to Finish Race Servers roadster and running in fourth place, found himself fighting to gain traction entering turn one. Warren tried to hang on but the car loaded up on the left rear and launched toward the outside wall.

The two-time Florida Speedweeks Champion could only hang on for the ride that ended in a heart stopping thud against the turn one wall. As Warren’s demolished car ground to a halt, Danny Ray, who had been running in the second groove, found himself staring at impending doom. The 72 year old plastered the motionless Warren, causing wheels to fly off of both machines, making both glad that they weren’t in real race cars.

Last Restart Keeps Finish Close

Once the track was cleaned up from Warren and Ray’s smash-up, the field had dwindled to six cars, two of them, including third place running Ryan Cloonan sat between the leader Dave Ohh and second place Brad Keysor. Ohh had a great restart, and as soon as Keysor cleared the lapped cars, the chase was on. But even though he set the fastest lap of the race with just four laps to go, Keysor still came up about a half second short of a win.

“I need five more laps,” said Keysor. “But after the way last year started, I’ll take a second. Thanks to BMK Logistics, 1st to Finish Race Servers, Hairbag Studios, BreezeGraphics.com, Icings on Top, and James East and Team Goon Squad for helping out tonight.

Behind the last ditch effort Keysor threw at Ohh, was a hard charging Anthony Corsoniti. The driver of the T’s Forecast.com machine had qualified third quick and started outside of row two, stayed out of trouble the entire race and had a lot of race car left at the end. The last restart afforded him a chance at a top three a Cloonan had a few bad laps in a row. Corsoniti tried to mount a charge, but he himself nearly spun out and decided to back it down and finish the race.

Bob Gangwer and Bobby Hayduk were the only cars left on the track at the end of the quick 50 lap feature.

Keysor Breaks Track Record

A very fast field was led by Brad Keysor at the top after breaking the one year old track record. Keysor stopped the clocks in Time Trials, lowering the supermodified sim racing rack record by nearly 2/10ths of a second at Desoto with a lap time of 11.258 seconds. Former record holder, Dave Ohh was second quick and under his old mark as well. For the second year in a row the fastest lap for the top five qualifiers was under 12 seconds.

Blast Off to Black Creek

The Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series blasts off to Black Creek Raceway for the second night of the 2022 SUPRS Florida Speedweeks for a 25 lap feature at the big 3/4 mile. Dave Ohh is the defending winner of this race.

Black Creek Raceway is one of two tracks that have hosted a SUPRS Florida Speedweeks race every year that the series has been contested. This year’s show at the NASCAR Heat sim racing track is part of the SUPRS/HeatFinder.net Supermodified Challenge and open to anyone that has the track, the SUPRS modification, and has registered to race at SUPRS.net.
