Curry Wins Race 5 of Florida Speedweeks but Bows out to Sand for Champion’s Crown
FEBRUARY 17, 2007 – DAYTONA BEACH, FL…Rochester, New York’s Ray Sand, Jr. is no stranger to big wins in SUPRS competition, but winning the 3rd Annual Florida Speedweeks Championship presented by Beachland Cleaning Services, Showplace Landscaping, and HGI which concluded after five nights of intense competition on February 15, 2007 is being heralded as his greatest accomplishment yet in online racing.
“I think this is the sweetest win yet,” began “The Sandman”. “Ya know I won the Dion Parish Memorial and the Randy Witkum Memorial which were huge to me, but this was the toughest one of all and I’m still not sure how I pulled it off.”
“Five nights five races, man it was a real workout and very challenging, there was a lot of luck involved in getting that five-pound bag of Florida Oranges, (one of the awards for winning Florida Speedweeks), I knew that JP was really fast and all the DRT and SUPRS regulars are so fast. I don’t know if I could have done it if JP hadn’t of had those connection issues so I’m going to savor this one for a while,” said Sand.
Sand joins the élite company of AJ Truax and Sean O’Kane as Speedweeks Champions in what has become one of the most sought after Crowns in online racing.
JP Curry of Ottsville, PA is a hard charger second to none in SUPRS competition and it propelled him to 4 New Track Records and two wins in the five race swing, but it wasn’t enough to top the consistent finishes of Ray Sand, Jr. for the overall Speedweeks Championship.
“What can I say?” wondered Curry. “I knew going into the last race what I had to do to pull this thing off and it was going to be tough, but I did what I had to and it just wasn’t enough to beat Ray, my hat’s off to him for a great Speedweeks run.”
The 2007 version of Speedweeks will be remembered for some of the closest racing ever and featured 25 drivers hailing from NH, NY, NJ, IN, MI, OH, MO, AL, PA, FL, and Canada, two first time winners, five new track records, and exceptionally tough contests at five very distinctive tracks.
Current SUPRS Winged Championship Division points leader Myles Maxon had his fair share of struggles throughout Speedweeks and stated, “I’m just glad Speedweeks is over, it was a tough one and even though I had a couple good runs, it wasn’t my best showing out there.”
Maxon who finished up the swing in sixth overall and had three top five finishes went on to say, “With Ray going so well and having those consistent finishes, he’s really started to put the pressure on me now for the points battle so I’m ready to move on down the road and get back to some good podium finishes.”
Maxon will have that opportunity this week, (2/21/07) in the 3rd Annual President’s Day Special 25 at New Hampshire Int. Speedway in a race sponsored by one of his own supporters, Tamarack Golf Club. All of the stars and cars of SUPRS will join “Mighty Myles” at this flat 1 mile oval to compete in “The Ultimate Online Sim Race Car”. Practice gets underway at 7:30pm with Time Trials at 8:45pm and racing promptly at 9:00pm.
