From the Back to the Front Twice, Ohh Sweeps Second Night of North Carolina Swing

Dave Ohh Puts it in Victory Lane at Southern National and Concord on Night 2 of SUPRS North Carolina Swing

October 21, 2020 – Midland, NCAfter struggling to get to the front on the first night of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 17th Annual North Carolina Swing, Dave Ohh had no problem going from the lead to the tail, and back to the lead again, and victory lane, at Southern National Motorsports Park and at Concord Motorsports Park on the second night of the Swing.

Ohh Navigates Through the Southern National Field

After a great start that saw him jump into second place from his fourth starting place, Ohh then took advantage of a restart on lap three at Southern National when he sailed it around the outside of his arch rival Rob Warren in turn one.

Ohh maintained the lead until lap eight when he got into the back end of Gary Waldron while trying to lap him. Waldron went around, but Ohh was sent to the tail. The driver of the TMS Wolfpack #11 made quick work of the back of the pack and was up to seventh place, having passed half of the field, when the caution flew on lap 12 for Carl Becker who had spun coming off of turn four.

Another restart, and another quick march around two more cars put Ohh in fifth place before the yellow flag came out on lap 14 for a 360 degree spin out of turn four by rookie John Held. The race finally had a 10 lap stretch of green flag racing and Ohh put himself into second place behind leader Brad Keysor.

The yellow came out for a crash by Bobby Hayduk and it’s what Ohh needed. A master of restarts, Ohh went to work on Keysor pressuring him to make a mistake. Keysor held his ground, but eventually succumbed to the SUPRS 2020 Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodified Champion six laps into the stint when he got loose off of turn two and Ohh sailed by on the outside.

The race had a total of eight cautions, but Keysor was never able to mount a serious challenge and finished in second with Keith Powell putting in another steady run for third.

“I had a great car tonight,” said the winner. “It just really rolled through the corners and even though I went to the back, I just tried to keep it clean and navigate the cars. Then Brad bobbled and that’s all it took. I was able to get by. He was clearly the faster car, and I don’t know if I could have passed him if he hadn’t of slipped.”

Three of the 14 starters failed to finish the wrecked plagued race, as drivers struggled to find grip over the fast high-banked, but bumpy, 3/8 mile in Kenly.

Second Verse Same as the First

Ohh started deeper in the field at Concord and wasn’t able to make it to the front as quickly, crashing into Brad Keysor on the front stretch on lap five to bring out the first caution of the race when Keysor got very loose and fought to save it.

However, just like the first race, Ohh began his methodical, but fast march from the back, ending up with the lead on lap 15 when he passed the all-time Concord winner Rob Warren, who had moved into the lead around rookie Steven Vincent on lap nine. Ohh went on to an unfettered victory, and even with a track packed with traffic, was able to lap up to third place finisher and rookie Ryan Cloonan. Keysor again came home in second and took over the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship point lead.

“The checkered was the best,” said Ohh when asked what the best part of his race at Concord was. “I could go to the bottom and just charge the corners with a good working car.” Ohh then made note of the incident with Keysor on lap five when he had to go to the back. “That has to be the first time that Brad and I have made contact. It was nothing intentional.”

“It was very tough out there tonight. There was a larger speed discrepancy than what we usually see, but for the most part the lapped cars did a good job and gave me room. A couple didn’t, but most of them did. I just tried to send it in there as much as possible and get by as quick as I could.”

All thirteen drivers that started the race finished with Ryan Cloonan of Oswego, NY climbing 10 places after being unable to take a time trial and having to start last.

Time to Hustle

The qualifying races are now complete and now the invitations to the top eight, (plus two alternates), in the North Carolina Swing points will be sent and those drivers will have a shot at becoming the 2020 North Carolina Swing Champion. Although, he may have been the odds on favorite, and with his two wins, Dave Ohh easily made the cut of being in the top eight in points, he will not be able to attend the Hickory Hustle due to prior commitments.

The invitation list reads like a who’s, who of SUPRS racing and includes four former NC Swing Champions, three SUPRS Champions, and two Icings on Top Rookies of the Year. Listed below are the drivers that have received an invitation to The Hickory Hustle at Hickory Motor Speedway. They are listed in order of points from the qualifying races:

  • Dave Ohh-285
  • Brad Keysor-275
  • Keith Powell-260
  • Ryan CloonanR-260
  • Bob Gangwer-245
  • Rob Warren-220
  • Kyle Perry-210
  • Carl Becker-150

In addition to the invited drivers above, two alternates have been selected. Rookies John Held and Steve Vincent will be ready to go if any of the eight invited drivers fail to show, miss the drivers meeting, or are otherwise unable to make the grid. So for now, Held will take Dave Ohh’s place and will have as much of a chance at sitting in victory lane after 75 challenging laps to be crowned North Carolina Swing Champion.

After practice, which goes from 8:30-8:45pm, the invited drivers will draw for their starting position in the 75 lap feature. The Hickory Hustle is slated to start at 9:05pm.
