Bob Gangwer on Pole, Joe Achzet Outside Row One for Closest Field in Summit Classic 125 History
Madera, CA – April 30, 2018… For the third time in four years Indiana’s Bob Gangwer has won the pole position for the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Summit Classic 125 at Madera Speedway. For the second year in a row, Utica, NY resident Joe Achzet is on the front row.
Shocked to Take Pole
Even though he’s done it before, the Goshen, IN driver of the RW Woodworking, B&G Racing Photos roadster was shocked to learn that he took his third Summit Classic pole. “There’s no way I would have ever guessed that I’d be on the pole based on the times guys were running in practice,” said Gangwer. “When it was all said and done, the fastest lap was my first and I really felt that I left a lot out there and didn’t think either lap would be close to the top four let alone pole, but man I’ll take it.”
The Rabbit Comes Out of His Hole
After last year’s Summit Classic 125 a disappointed Joe “The Rabbit” Achzet announced his retirement from SUPRS saying, “I just want to thank all you but I’m going to take this opportunity to announce my retirement from SUPRS.
But like a bee drawn to honey, after nearly a year off, Achzet was back and as fast as ever turning in practice laps in the 11.6 second range.
Closest Qualified Field in Summit Classic History
Gangwer and Achzet make up the closest Summit Classic 125 in the history of the race with just one, one-thousandth of a second separating the two. In fact less than a half-second separated the eight drivers that took time, making this one of the closest starting fields ever.
Rodrigues Wins Heat
Nelson Rodrigues of Stoneham, MA won the Qualifying Heat Race and minimized the damage of a poor time trial run and having three of the four eligible drivers take their Guaranteed Starting places. Kyle Clark was second and Carl Becker third. Any drivers showing up for the race that did not qualify will have to start from the back of the field based on the SUPRS points won handicapping system
