February 28, 2021 – Goshen, IN…Get ready for three great nights of supermodified sim racing through the hills and valleys of Pennsylvania with the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 16th Annual Keystone Nationals March 2-4, 2021.
SUPRS 16th Annual Keystone Nationals featuring The Randy Witkum Memorial 125 is a three night trek of supermodified sim racing through the state of Pennsylvania, using the NASCAR Heat and rFactor sim racing platforms.
Keeping Keystone Points
The feature races vary in length from 25 laps, to 125 and are held at a variety of tracks that includes the “Square Circle of RT 93 Raceway, the challenging one-mile dog-leg oval of Nazareth, and culminates at the prestigious Randy Witkum Memorial 125 held at the 1/2 mile of Jennerstown Speedway.
The racers will try to rack up as many feature points as possible each night as they race for the Keystone Nationals Championship. Of the current crop of SUPRS drivers, Rob Warren has the most Keystone Nationals Championships with four, which is tied with Myles Maxon for most all-time. Bob Gangwer has three and last year Dave Ohh won his first. In all seven drivers have won the Keystone Nationals Championships.
Is it a Square or a Circle?
On Monday March 2, 2021, the three-night Keystone Nationals gets rolling with a visit to the half-mile of RT 93 Raceway. Many SUPRS racers compare it to the legendary, but now closed, Flemington Speedway because of it’s squared off ends that have “short-chutes” in between the turns.
Most say that the fast way around is to run a near perfect circle, which is tough to do while avoiding the steel guardrails that line the inside of the track. They’ll run two heat races and the 50 lap feature in their NASCAR Heat winged supermodifieds at the fictional track located in Slusser, PA. Bob Gangwer is the defending winner of the race.
Night Two at Nazareth
The second night of the Keystone Nationals sees the racers move to rFactor and the thrilling Nazareth Speedway This one mile oddly shaped track has various elevation changes, a few distinctive bumps, banking that varies from 2.7° and 6.0°, and has what many consider one of the trickiest dog legs, and turn one corners of the season.
Consistency and a smooth, fast approach through the dog leg is what drivers will be striving for if they want to be in Nazareth victory lane after 25 rFactor supermodified sim racing feature laps. Dave Ohh’s win at Nazareth last year was what ultimately became the tie-breaker and gave him the Keystone National Championship after he ended the series in a tie with Rob Warren.
Witkum Memorial Wednesday
Finally, on Wednesday evening, the Keystone Nationals will culminate with the race that is one of the longest running in SUPRS history; The Randy Witkum Memorial. This 125 lap grind at the famed Jennerstown Speedway honors the late Randy Witkum, a supermodified racer that tragically lost his life while participating in an International Supermodified Association event at Jennerstown in 1999.
After another classic, Keith Powell won his first Randy Witkum Memorial last year. Powell became the ninth different winner of the race, and was full of gratitude as he had a hard time finding his words after the win. “There’s so may things rattling through my head, it’s hard to get my thoughts together. To win the Randy Witkum Memorial is really special,” he said.
The winner of the 2021 Randy Witkum Memorial joins Brad Keysor, (2020 Dion Parish Memorial winner), and Dave Ohh, (2021 Terry Gibson Memorial winner), as a guaranteed starter for the season ending 17th Annual Summit Classic 125 at Madera Speedway next month.
