Oswego, NY July 2, 2013….Domenic Gioia and Steve Callahan each picked up a win in the SUPRS Independence Day Twin 35 features at Oswego Speedway on Tuesday, making four winners in four races for the 2013 non-wing championship season.
Gioia was an emotional winner in the first feature, dedicating his win to the late “Irish” Jack Murphy and his good friend and former supermodified racer Dave Halstead. While his run in the second feature didn’t turn out as well, Gioia didn’t seem to mind saying, “Anytime you can win against these guys in this league, it just makes up for all the tough runs you have throughout the year and I had to work for that one with Chris, (Meyers), right behind me.”
Meyers, after racing right on the rear nerf bar of Gioia for the better portion of the first 35 lap event faded to a distant second, but was happy with his run after dismal finishes the first two weeks of competition. “My hats off to Dom for that win. He simply had the car to beat and no matter where I tried to get him, he was just running a great line, ” he said. Meyers ended up with a podium finish in the second feature as well making him the only driver to do so and stated, “Somewhere, somehow, I’m just off a couple of tenths somewhere because as the race went on and Myles, (Maxon), dusted me, the car just kept falling off.”
Kyle Perry of Fulton, NY had one of his best finishes ever coming home in third place in the first Twin. Perry is the youngest competitor in the SUPRS league but held his own against the wylie veteran Ray Sand, Jr. who came home in fourth. Maxon in the Tamrack Golf Club machine rounded out the top five in the first feature.
“Steady” Steve Callahan was an elated winner of the second feature and after a great start from the front row, worked hard
the entire race to fend off the charges of Myles Maxon nearly the entire 35 lap distance and said, “I had a great start and just tried to run smooth, then all of the sudden I heard an engine closing and looked at the splits and it showed Myles closing. I knew it was going to be a long night from there on out, but we held on.” Always the gracious winner, Callahan, driver of the CPR Motorsports machine congratulated his fellow winner on the night Dom Gioia in post race interviews.
Maxon, Meyers, Rob Warren and Ray Sand, Jr. filled out the top five, with Sand, Jr. grabbing the SUPRSCharger Award for both features after moving forward the most positions from his starting position each race.
The SUPRS competitors now set their sites on one of the marquee events of the non-wing season as they get ready to run the 9th Annual Jim Shampine Memorial 80 at Oswego Speedway, Tuesday, July 9. This prestigious event will feature Time Trials, Heats, and an 80 lap feature in memory of the legendary supermodified racer and innovator Jim Shampine. Practice starts at 8:30p with racing at 9:00pm.
