Gioia Runs Away, Gangwer Holds Warren at Bay on Night 2 of North Carolina Swing

Dominic Gioia Posts Convincing Win at Southern National, Bob Gangwer Breaks Warren Stranglehold at Concord

October 18, 2017 – Concord, NC – October 2, 2017…Domenic Gioia easily handled the field on his way to leading all but two laps and claiming the win at Southern National Motorsports Park on the second night of action during the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 14th Annual North Carolina Swing. Then Bob Gangwer broke Rob Warren’s amazing Concord Motorsports Park string of four wins in a row in a race where nobody seemed to want to win.

Domenic Gioia had no challengers when won at Southern National and Bob Gangwer kept Rob Warren from winning his fifth Concord feature in a row.

In the first race at Southern National, Gioia quickly drove his way to the lead, passing front row starter Kyle Clark, then sliding past pole-sitter Kevin Timmins when he brushed the wall on lap three. Gioia had plenty of breathing room and was rarely challenged, maintaining a one second advantage over Keith Powell and Rob Warren who were waging a fierce battle for second behind him.

Just two cautions slowed Gioia’s pace including one with less than ten laps to go. Nonetheless, the Oswego, NY racer was as calm as a cucumber on his way to winning a race that took just a little over 12 minutes to run.

“I wasn’t nervous at all,” he confidently stated. “I was just out there running my race trying to stay out of trouble. It feels real good to get a win this early in the season.”

For the first time in as long as anyone could remember, Rob Warren failed to win either of the two races on the second night of the North Carolina Swing. More shocking was that he wasn’t sitting in the Winner’s Circle at Concord Motorsports Park, a track where he had won the previous four years in a row.

To his credit, Warren has had a very good North Carolina Swing so far finishing out of second place just once. He also kept his streak of podium finishes at Concord  alive, a stat that goes back to 2011.

Gangwer, the 2013 North Carolina Swing Champion,  found himself in first place with 14 laps to go after five other drivers that were either in the lead or going for the lead, including Warren, then spun or crashed. I know they say it’s better to be lucky than good and I think that is starting to be my story after last night and now this, ” joked Gangwer.

The qualifying races are now complete and invitations to The Hickory Hustle at Hickory Motor Speedway have been sent out to the following drivers:

  • Carl Becker
  • Kyle Clark
  • Kevin Timmins

Nelson Rodrigues is the alternates if the qualified drivers can’t make the show. The winner of the Hickory Hustle will be crowned the 2017 North Carolina Swing Champion, but to win, the SUPRS racers will have to overcome a random draw for starting position and 75 intense laps of action in very close quarters. Practice begins at 8:00pm with racing slated to go at 9:00pm.
