Bob Gangwer, Steve Callahan Open North Carolina Swing with Wins

October 17, 2017 – Caraway, NC Bob Gangwer and Steve Callahan found victory lane in very different ways as the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), began its 14th Annual North Carolina Swing Tuesday at Dasera Speedway and Caraway Speedway.

SUPRS 14th Annual North Carolina Swing Night 1 Victory Lane Slide

Good Luck for Gangwer at Dasera, Domination by Callahan at Caraway on Night 1 of North Carolina Swing.

Crazy Night for Callahan

But for an errant car Callahan may have swept the night, as he was well on his way to winning the first feature at Dasera before being wiped out. Callahan took the lead on lap 10 passing early leader, and three-time Dasera Speedway winner Carl Becker, when Becker scrubbed the back stretch wall. The defending North Carolina Swing Champion then pulled out to a solid half-track lead until disaster struck with just nine laps left.

“It’s just my luck,” said Callahan as he described the incident that kept him from winning. “I’ve come to expect that if anything can happen it will and it did when all the sudden Kevin’s car shot across the track from the infield and wiped me out.”

In an unimaginable turn of events, while enjoying his sizable lead, Kevin Timmins collected Callahan after Timmins’ computer screen went black, and his game froze up. When the game got going again the BreezeGraphics.com driver was sitting outside of the track unsure of how he got there, and then, just as suddenly, Timmins found himself in the path of the leader.

“Man, I just feel horrible for what happened to Steve,” Timmins said. “I really didn’t know what was going on, all of a sudden everything gone, then all of a sudden it was back.”

Good Fortune for Gangwer

Bob Gangwer, after starting in fifth place, was sitting in second and was the unsuspecting recipient of an early Christmas gift in the form of an inherited victory. “I just saw Steve go flying and I thought maybe a lapped car got into him,” Gangwer explained. “There’s no way I would have ever caught Steve. I feel horrible for him.”

Rob Warren brought his 1st to Finish Race Servers ride home for second, while Keith Powell, heartbroken teammate to Callahan, was third over a second behind the winner.

No Stopping Callahan in Race 2

Callahan was a man on a mission in the second race of the night at Caraway Speedway. Qualifying second quick, and a handicap that put him inside of row two for the start of the 40 lap feature gave him all the more incentive to vindicate his loss at Dasera.

Nelson Rodrigues brought the field to the green flag, but by lap one was quickly dispatched by Callahan. “I was driving mad,” Callahan admitted. “I got by Domenic and Kyle and I decided I was going to put my head down and run 40 laps of qualifying.”

With the hammer dropped and determination in his eyes, the pilot of the C.P.R. Motorsports machine, left the rest of the field so far behind, that it seemed like it was still at Dasera Speedway. After stretching his lead to over eight seconds, he took a breather with five laps to go. “I wasn’t thinking about anything but winning and when I looked up and realized I was over eight second ahead, I thought I should back it down a little and just coast home.”

Even though he let up some, Callahan still finished 8.6 seconds ahead of second place finisher Rob Warren. Callahan, not surprisingly, also set the fastest lap of the race at 14.164 seconds. Bob Gangwer came home third after a late race pass on Carl Becker.

One Night Down, Two to Go

The SUPRS stars move on to Southern National Motorsports Park  and Concord Motorsports Park tomorrow for the third and fourth legs of the challenging North Carolina Swing. Practice for both races begins at 8pm with racing slated to go at 9:oo.

The swing finishes off  at Hickory Motor Speedway on Thursday, October 19th where the winner of challenging “Hickory Hustle 75” will be crowned North Carolina Swing Champion and gain 20 bonus points in the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Championship.
