Chad Phelps Sweeps Independence Day Twin 35s at Oswego Speedway
Oswego, NY – July 5, 2016…It may have taken Chad Phelps six years and five months to get back into the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Victory Lane, but after sweeping the Independence Day Twins, he left no doubt that he remembers how to find his way under the checkered flag first.
“Boy was it crazy there for a little bit,” said Phelps. “I want to say thanks for all the help from everyone getting this rig up and going. It’s been pretty ugly up until now, but I finally feel like I can drive it.”
Lots of Carnage
Even Phelps wasn’t immune to the carnage of the first race and was involved in a fracas with his friend and teammate Derrick Backus in turn three. “I don’t know if something happened there with my teammate Derrick when we got together, but the caution was already out and we got collected but luckily I didn’t tear it up too bad,” he explained.
Phelps Balances Real Life with Sim Racing
Phelps, who campaigns a Dirt Modified race car in Oswego County New York, was a rising force in SUPRS after moving into the Gold Crest Division in 2010. It didn’t take him long to nail down his first win and he did so in a huge way by claiming victory at the SUPRS Copper World Classic.
Supermodified sim racing took a back seat to his real modified racing career and Phelps disappeared as quickly as he had blasted upon the scene and that Copper World Classic win was the only one that went into the stat book.
With the encouragement of his Disturbed Motorsports teammates, Derrick Backus and Kyle Clark, Phelps recently returned to SUPRS competition and again has picked up right where he left off six years ago.
Rare Company
Phelps’ is also significant because it is only the second time in SUPRS history that a drive has won both of the Independence Day Twins, and although it’s hard to find an exact count, one of only a few times that the SUPRS Double Down bonus has ever been claimed for winning two features in one night.
Second Win Harder
That second win wasn’t as easy as the first for Phelps when he had to battle Rob Warren for the majority of the nearly non-stop race. “I knew someone was there all over me,” said the X Man about his second feature. “A couple of times I messed up and I would have bet on it that he, (Warren), was going to get by me, but luckily we just hung on because I’m sure Rob was faster than me.”
Heat race winners were Phelps and Keith Powell.
Back to Normal
After two weeks of double features in a row the SUPRS racers settle back in for a regular night of racing on Tuesday, July 12 for the Craft Pug Creations 45 at Oswego Speedway.
The evening begins when the SUPRS Race Server opens at 7p for system checks. Official Practice is 8:00-8:30pm and the first heat is 9:00pm.
