Tire Conservation Key to Jeff Russell Special Win for Dave Ohh
March 5, 2019 – Las Vegas, NV…Dave Ohh of Union, CT conserved his tires and came home the winner of the 85 lap, Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Jeff Russell Special March 5 at The Bullring. Ohh took the lead on lap seven and was able to hold on after several late race restarts. Bob Gangwer finished in second place a little over one second behind with Rob Warren claiming third.
Tire Management Key to Win
Once Ohh got the lead from Gangwer, he quickly put some track between the two, but the Union, CT racers knew he had to take care of his tires. “It was a race of endurance,” Ohh explained. “I wasn’t expected to get by Bob in the beginning because he seemed to check out quite a bit, but after that it was just about managing tires.
Dave “SpeedyMan” Ohh wondered if he wasn’t the only one that was thinking about saving tires for the end of the 85 lap feature. With a deluge of cautions toward the end of the race, he wondered if Gangwer had done the same.
“I got pretty worried there with all those late race restarts thinking Bob had saved a little bit more than me,” said the TMS Wolfpack sponsored driver. “But it turned out I had just enough to run some fast laps at the end. For me the restarts were fine once the tires cooled down. They were still pretty good and I could get on it and go then back off a little bit. Really it was all about managing tires.”
Ohh’s win was his second in a row, third of the seven race “Winter Western Swing,” and the seventh overall in his SUPRS rookie season. You can watch the Jeff Russell Special on our YouTube Playlist of the same name.
Warren, Keysor, Gangwer Win Preliminaries
Earlier in the evening Rob Warren and Brad Keysor each won a 10 lap qualifying Heat Race. Bob Gangwer held off Ohh to take a thrilling six lap Fast Car Dash, which went green to checkered and took just one minute, 16 seconds to complete.
Race Run to Raise Money for Jeff Russell
SUPRS is dedicated to helping injured supermodified racers and their families in times of need. To that end the Jeff Russell Special was run to help bring about awareness and to raise money for one of those drivers.
Jeff Russell was critically injured during the last practice session for the Supermodified Racing Association, (SMRA)”Night of Fire” event at The Bullring in Las Vegas, NV on October 30, 2010 and continues to heal from Traumatic Brain Injury suffered in the crash.
The many medical bills have been hard on his family, but you can help. All donations to the Dion Parish Memorial Benevolent Fund for Supermodifieds, received between 3/5-3/12 will be sent to the Jeff Russell Road to Recovery Fund. Utah for St. Patrick’s Day
The SUPRS racers head to Salt Lake, UT and will look for some luck at the St. Patrick’s Day Grab O’ the Green at Rocky Mountain Raceways on Tuesday March 12.
It’s the second year in a row that SUPRS will contest the annual St. Patrick’s Day show at RMR and it will use the Winter Western Swing format of Time Trials, Fast Car Dash, Heats and a 50 lap feature. Last year, Steve Callahan became the only two-time winner of the popular SUPRS, holding off Derrick Backus in a finish that went right down to the wire
