Myles Maxon Wins Hickory Hustle to Claim Third SUPRS North Carolina Swing Championship
Jacksonville, NC – November 6, 2014…Myles Maxon overcame the tight confines of Hickory Motor Speedway to win The Hickory Hustle and claim the 11th Annual North Carolina Swing Championship. It was Maxon’s third Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series North Carolina Swing Championship overall and his first since 2010. Maxon is the only SUPRS racer to have ever won the Swing title more than once.
Throughout the grueling five race swing the Oswego, NY native was the model of consistency. Maxon never finished below third place over the three nights that the North Carolina Swing Championship was contested and saved his best run for last, making his lone win of the Swing count the most.
While at the end of the race he was able to stretch his lead to more than one second over second place finisher and 2013 North Carolina Swing Champion Bob Gangwer, Maxon’s race was one of the most challenging he’s had all season. He said, “Win or lose this track’s a bear and I was kinda happy to see lap 75 come up on the board.”
An intense battle among the top four cars early in the race included between early leader and 2012 North Carolina Swing Champion Carl Becker, Gangwer, Maxon and Steve Callahan who was looking for his first Hickory Hustle win. While Maxon, Gangwer and Callahan swapped positions, fifth place racer Rob Warren was able to draw close and put himself into the fray as well allowing Becker to draw ahead somewhat.
Commenting on the ferocity of the action Gangwer said, “It was nerve racking. Carl’s leading I know Myles is trying to work Carl, I’m trying to work Myles, Steve’s behind me, i don’t know how close rob is to Steve, and I was flipping out.”
Maxon moved into second place past Gangwer on lap 38 then set sail towards Becker. By lap 43 Maxon had completed the pass for the lead and never relinquished it again.
“Carl ran great, he just slipped once and I was able to slip under him in (turn) two,” explained Maxon.

Becker’s fall from the front continued in the ensuing laps as he dropped all the way to fifth place but ended passing Rob Warren on the last lap to come home fourth.
“The car was gone, it was literally gone,” said Becker.
Steve Callahan has one of the best finishing records in the history of The Hickory Hustle, yet has never been able to win the race or the North Carolina Swing Championship. He again had another great run and his third place finish is not indicative of the incredible race he ran.
“The car was pretty good, I was pretty happy with the set-up all night,” Callahan said.
