Myles Maxon Wins Crazy Canuck Feature, Pairs with Domenic Gioia for Snowball Derby Challenge Championship

Nelles Corners, Ont., CAN – January 6, 2015…After starting from the pole position and passing the reigning series champion on lap 16, Myles Maxon crossed the finish line first, winning the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series 11th Annual Crazy Canuck Snowball Derby and Can-Am Challenge Tuesday at Cayuga Speedway.

It was SUPRS lone visit north of the border this season and Maxon showed the Canadian crowd that he hasn’t forgotten how to win at their fast 5/8ths, bringing home the victory by a huge 6.257-second margin over second place Bob Gangwer. Steve Callahan finished third some seven seconds back. With the win, Maxon joins John Davidson and Ray Sand, Jr. as the only multi-time winners of this event.

Domenic Gioia joined Maxon in victory lane to receive the Snowball Derby Championship Crown. The pair finished the night with 130 points, tying Bob Gangwer and Dave Brigandi for the team championship, but received the winner’s laurels based on the highest finishing team member. This was Maxon’s second Snowball Derby Championship, his first coming 2009 when he teamed up with Gary Waldron. This was Gioia’s first.

An ever humble Maxon said, “I really didn’t think I was going to get around Ray and any time you can get by him it’s an accomplishment and to team up with Dom for the team win, it’s just really cool.”

Gioia gave all the accolades to his teammate Maxon for securing the Snowball Derby Championship saying, “It’s a good thing Myles won because I just can’t get a handle on this place. He’s the one that got us this win, I was probably more of a burden than a help, but I’ll take it because it helps ease the pain of 50 long laps.”

Maxon battled with Ray Sand, Jr. early on in the race after making his way past Bob Gangwer by lap five. He put the pressure on the three-time Crazy Canuck winner and finally found a way around on lap 16. Gangwer followed a couple of laps latter, then Sand, Jr. pulled off the track. “I was just focused on clicking off good laps and I thought Ray was still there but I realized finally he wasn’t. The main thing here is you can push a little bit, but you don’t want to get up into the wall so it’s a fine line of being aggressive yet passive at the same time,” Maxon explained.

Bob Gangwer has never won the Crazy Canuck feature and although he started up front had no illusions of making the 2015 version of the race his first. “I got really lucky to start outside the first row and was able to lead that first lap, then battle a little with Ray before he dropped out, but I knew that Myles was going to be the class of the field, so  congratulations to Myles on the win and to Dom and him for the overall Snowball Derby Championship,” he stated.

Steve Callahan had another good run, pulling off his third top-three finish in as many races. He said, “Congrats to Myles. I had a good race, the car was really good until lap 35 then it started plowing like a dump truck so I just tried to focus on keeping it out of the wall.” Callahan paused then added, “It was cool to get paired up with Joe tonight for the Snowball Derby Championship for a father/son deal.”

Rob Warren, Carl Becker, Dave Brigandi, and Domenic Gioia followed the top three across the finish line, while Ray Sand, Jr. had troubles ending up over 25 laps down. Joey Callahan made his return to SUPRS racing after a long break but was unable to finish the 50 lap grind.

Earlier in the night, Maxon was the only driver to dip into the 16.3-second range when he set fast time with a 16.339. Heat wins went to Steve Callahan and Rob Warren. Ray Sand, Jr. was the winner of a wild Canadian Pursuit that saw contact early in the race between Warren and Becker which ended their race early on.
