Meyers Scores Big on Tie-Breaker at Mid-Summer Shootout

Share SUPRS:

August 3, 2005 – Jennerstown, PA…It took a whole lot of racing, and a whole lot more points tallying by True Henderson, but when the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series “Mid-Summer Shootout” number crunching was done, Chris Meyers was declared the overall winner on a tie-breaker with Frankie Keene. Meyers, Keene, and the duo doing the most winning this season, John Davidson and Jim Crannell, all went into the final shootout with a great shot at scoring big, after none of them finished lower than second in their qualifying features.

After the blind draw for their starting places in the make or break third feature where all the marbles were on the line for the overall Mid-Summer Shootout points bonus, Meyers ended up on the pole. He couldn’t have asked for a better spot considering that Crannell and Davidson got stuck in the last two rows.

That advantage of being on the front row was just want Meyers needed to lead all the laps and come home with the win in the third feature. Keene did all he could, and ended up moving one spot up from his third place start to finish second. But with Meyers on the pole, Keene couldn’t overcome the fact that Meyers got bonus points for leading laps and ended up with more laps led over the course of the night than Keene.

Jim Crannell may not have won the bonus points for having the best combined feature finishes for the night, but he sure did make the best of his bad starting spot in the last feature. He moved up from sixth to finish third and grab the SUPRSCharger bonus. Those 10 bonus points, coupled with the fact that he out qualified John Davidson, then beat him in their feature after they both won their heats, added to the 25 points he gained over Davidson in the third feature, left Crannell in better shape after a long night of racing, than that of his main rival in the championship.

Mike Dougherty had a good night as well. He qualified third quick, finished second in his heat race, third in his qualifying feature, then fourth in the Shootout, giving the Grand Rapids, MI driver some much needed points after missing a couple of races.

In other notes, even though they didn’t make it to the Shootout, Frank Ferry, JR and Joey Constanza had relatively good nights of online racing. Each qualified in the top five and finished in the better half of their heats to meet up in the first qualifying feature. That’s where the good times went out the window though as they trailed the field in the last two finishing positions of the first feature. Still, it was a lot better showing for Constanza and a decent night for Ferry.
