Chris Meyers Holds off Maxon, Warren for First “The Whistler” Win

Oswego, NY – August 14, 2014…Chris Meyers did a masterful job holding off Myles Maxon and Rob Warren to become the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series The Whistler 63 Pete Trenca Memorial Champion at Oswego Speedway.

“Crazy” Chris Meyers held off Myles Maxon and Rob Warren for The Whistler win.

Meyers, starting from the pole position, was able to get the jump on Maxon and never looked back, leading all 63 laps of the prestigious race. Maxon, Rob Warren, Ray Sand, Jr. and Bob Gangwer rounded out the top five finishers. Heat wins went to Meyers and Sand, Jr.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be a part of this league and this win right here tonight, without a doubt, is the biggest of my online career,” said the excited winner.

There has never been a repeat winner in the ten-year history of the race that honors the late Peter “Program” Trenca. Trenca was a fixture at the Oswego Speedway selling programs for over five decades before his passing in 2004.

With three former winners in the race, Meyers was well aware that the competition was going to be tough, especially from the current point leader. “If I told you I wasn’t nervous, I’d be lying,” said Meyers of his concerns about trying to keep Maxon, (who was also looking for his first The Whistler win), at bay for the entire race. “I knew when I saw the lineup, I’d have to have the race of my life to pull it off, and sure enough it was pretty good.”

For “Mighty” Myles, it was another moment of being the bridesmaid and not the bride in a race that he has been close to winning many times and that means a lot to him personally.

“I certainly would have loved to win this one. I’ve had a few cracks at it, but have always been the bridesmaid,” stated Maxon.

“Hats off to Chris, what an unbelievable race he ran. The one or two opportunities he gave me, I wasn’t able to capitalize on and if I couldn’t get around him the right way, I wasn’t getting around him.”

Rob Warren once again had a front row seat for the battle between Meyers and Maxon, but didn’t have time to enjoy it as he was right in the thick of it while looking to become the first two-time winner of The Whistler.

“Congrats to Chris on the win,” began the Pulaski, NY racer. “There was no sitting back and watching tonight that’s for sure”

“It was kind of like how close can i get to the 79, (Maxon), without screwing him up, and how close is the 18, (Sand, Jr.) behind me because I just wanted to be able to follow Myles through the hole if he ever was able to make one.

“Chris had a couple of brushes with the wall, and Myles got in there once but backed out because they were at the end of the straight and there wasn’t enough time for Myles or me to make it happen without crashing Chris, ”  said Warren, who has one feature win this season.

It was Meyers second feature win of the 10th Anniversary Gold Crest Non-Wing Championship. The win gives him a guaranteed starting spot in the 10th Annual Topless! 200 and he has now moved into the top five in points after struggling at the beginning of the season.

While Meyers has little chance of advancing beyond his current place in the point standings, the battle is anything but over at the top with Myles Maxon leading Ray Sand, Jr. but a scant 26 points going into next week’s Topless! 200 season finale. As has happened the last few years, the battle to be crowned the SUPRS Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion will go down to the checkered flag of the 200 lap grind between Maxon and Sand, Jr. Maxon is looking for his first Non-Wing Championship while Sand, Jr. is hoping to keep his streak alive and take his fourth in a row.

The SUPRS Topless! 200 extravaganza at Oswego Speedway will get started Sunday, August 17 with SUPRS Test-n-Tune starting at 8pm. Then on Monday, beginning at 7:15 pm, the SUPRS stars will strap on the wings for 50 laps of action in the SUPRSNationals which is part of the 2014 Empire State Super Series regional championship.

Immediately following SUPRSNationals, the non-wing supermodifieds will take to the track for the 10th Annual Topless! 200 practice and time trials.

On Tuesday, August 19, the 10th Annual Topless! 200 cars will fire up at 7:00 pm for practice, followed by heat races at 8:00 pm, and the green flag for the main event at 9:00 pm.
