Ray Sand, Jr. Claims Bonus as SUPRS Mid-Season Champion
Oswego, NY – January 21, 2014… After another late race pass in one feature and a charge from last starting place to second in another, Ray Sand, Jr. has been crowned the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series Mid-Season Champion for the Winged Gold Crest Division for the second year in a row.
The SUPRS Mid-Season Championships featured Twin 35 lap features at Oswego Speedway and in the first feature, Steve Callahan was once again the victim of Sand’s determination to win. Callahan, after leading from the drop of the green flag, lost the lead and the win when Sand, Jr. took advantage of Callahan sliding high as he entered turn three on lap 33. Callahan held on for second over Bob Gangwer, Gary Waldron and Rob Warren.
The second feature line up was a complete inversion of the finish of the first one and that put Dave Brigandi and Carl Becker on the front row. After the initial start was called back, Becker got the jump on the pole position starting Brigandi and used it to his advantage to lead the entire 35 lap distance. Ray Sand, Jr. charged from last place to second, while Domenic Gioia, Bob Gangwer, and Rob Warren rounded out the top five.
Earlier in the evening Sand, Jr. came home with fast time, Steve Callahan won the dash for the Fast Four, and Kevin Timmins picked up the win in a wild heat race. Gary Waldron was awarded the SUPRSCharger for the first feature with Sand, Jr. picking it up for the second feature.
