Maxon First 3-Time Winner of Jim Shampine Memorial
Oswego, NY – June 17, 2014…Myles Maxon returned to Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series victory lane for the second time in as many races to celebrate his third Jim Shampine Memorial at Oswego Speedway Tuesday night.
After a bad time trial run that forced him to take the green flag from sixth starting position, Maxon proved to be too “Mighty” for early race leader Rob Warren when he made the pass for the lead and win on lap 50.
Warren, who started the race from the pole, led 50 of laps of the 80 lap feature race and ended up second over other top five finishers Ray Sand, Jr., Steve Callahan, and Domenic Gioia.
Maxon’s race was anything but a given and he never really thought he had a shot at the win until Chris Meyers, who was running second at the time, lost his connection to the server and dropped out of the race on lap 25.
The winner said, “I feel bad for Chris. I don’t know if i could have gotten around him. I had pretty much conceded that I didn’t have anything for him and was probably going to be following him the rest of the race.
“I was content to let him work Rob. I don’t know what happened but he just dropped out right in front of me and it’s a shame because he had a great run going.”
As happy as he was with his third Jim Shampine Memorial win, and first since 2008, Maxon took a moment to reflect on more important things saying, “I got lucky on the start, got lucky with Chris dropping out and Rob ran a great race so it’s pretty cool being first three-time winner of this race.
“With Tom Heveron passing away and my uncle passing away, it’s not a fun time and of course this being the Shampine Memorial, I think we all just need to take some time to remember those we’ve lost and be grateful for what we have and that we can all hang out here on Tuesday night.”
Even though he got the luck of the draw and led the field to the green flag from the front row, second place finisher Rob Warren knew that winning the Jim Shampine Memorial was going to be anything but easy.
“First of all congratulations to Myles, he ran a great race,” he said. ” I had a great start and had a great lead but then Chris and Myles just hooked up and reeled me in.”
“I knew that iI was in trouble because Chris and Myles are great competitors. I don’t know what happened to Chris but then all of a sudden Myles was right on me,” explained Warren.
After Meyers dropped out, Maxon first pressured Warren for the lead on lap 30, but Warren refused to bow to the pressure. Warren picks up the story, “On lap 30 he had a great run down backstretch and I absolutely protected my lead and was thinking to myself ‘no man I want this, I want this win way too bad,’ and I ran into the side of him trying to protect the lead. I didn’t give him an inch and he backed out.”
Maxon refused to give up and eventually made the pass for the lead stick on lap 50. Warren said, “I knew he’d take another shot so I kept it on the bottom and gave him all the room up top.”
“Then 20 laps later after the first try, I screwed up and over drove turn one, I shot up the track, bogged the car and as soon as I got half way out of turn two he got under me and that was it,” he said.
Ray Sand, Jr. was in a fine position to pick up his second Jim Shampine Memorial in a row, (the third driver to do so including Maxon 2007-’08, and John Davidson 2010-’11), with a redraw that put him outside of row one after setting fast time for the night. Sand, Jr. had a rough start and dropped as low as sixth place before clawing his way back to a podium finish. The defending race winner and Gold Crest Non-Wing Champion was unavailable for comment after the race.
After two extended length races in a row the SUPRS racers will be in action Tuesday, June 24 for a regular 45 lap feature at Oswego Speedway.
