Brad Keysor Dominates Fourth Night of SUPRS 2022 Florida Speedweeks at USA International Speedway
February 3, 2022 – Lakeland, FL…Brad Keysor of Liverpool, NY dominated the proceedings on the fourth night of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS) 2022 Florida Speedweeks Thursday at USA International Speedway. After setting a new track record in time trials, Keysor led all the laps, set the fastest lap of the race then brought home the win by nearly 10 seconds in the 25 lap, green to checkered feature. Keysor also won at USA last year. More importantly, the USA winner has a 15 point lead in the Speedweeks Championship. Dave Ohh, who had won the first three Speedweeks features, chose to start and park to race for the Legends Car Championship at HeatFinder.net
Rob Warren who finished second in the six minute, nineteen second thriller, had a spirited race long battle with Anthony Corsoniti, Zach Sears and Ryan Cloonan. Cloonan ended up in third for the second year in a row, and third time in four 2022 Speedweeks races.
Keysor Glad to Shed Speedweeks Struggles
“First off, thanks to 1st to Finish Race Servers, great servers going with the blizzards in Upstate NY. Also Hairbag Studios, BreezeGraphics.com, and Icings on Top for all they do and BMK Logistics for letting me race,” said Keysor.
“It was a good night. I’d like to win with Dave here. I kinda gave one up last night. But tonight I knew I had a fast car. But great race it’s a tribute to our biggest field of the week and no cautions, and from what I’ve heard from all the drivers some very respectful, clean racing out there. And that’s what really matters. That’s what really makes it fun. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s a matter of did ya have fun when you were doing it. Most important is that we extend our prayers to Carl Becker. I know that he’s had a bit of rough week,” said the winner. Becker is a Life-Time SUPRS Member and has been hospitalized since Tuesday.
To the Front Fast
Keysor wasted no time getting to the front, passing pole sitter Anthony Corsoniti before the first lap was done. Maybe not so ironically, Keysor had sized Corsoniti up before the green flag dropped on the feature. “Really the front row did a great job on the start, Anthony, (Corsoniti who started on the pole), did a good job getting himself cleared,” complimented Keysor.
“I knew I could go a little bit to his outside, I had worked on it in practice particularly around him after I’d seen him run earlier, so I wanted to make sure it worked up there. Anthony was respectful, fast but respectful and we got through it clean and that’s a credit to him.”
His plan after getting to the front was to stay there and not make the same mistake he had made the night before at Dodge where he played his cards a little too conservatively. Keysor explained, “Then I got free air. I think at one point Anthony, Rob, Zach, and Ryan got racing and I think the draft broke. So once I broke their draft I could get out and go and wasn’t pulling them anymore.
Then I was more or less riding around and praying that late caution that came out last night, didn’t come out again because I was just using the car up and going trying to put some lapped cars between me and anyone in case there was a restart.”
Beating, Banging, Hanging On
Keysor may have known that the pack behind him were fighting for the scraps left in his blazing trail, but he made an understatement when he said they “got racing.” Throughout most of the race, there was great war waged over the best of the rest behind Keysor that included Anthony Corsoniti, Zach Sears, Ryan Cloonan and Rob Warren. Corsoniti eventually fell by the wayside leaving the other three to duke it out for second place.
Sears, who is notorious for hanging out on the left rear tire of the driver in front of him, hounded Warren repeatedly and wasn’t afraid to let Warren know he was there. When his scare tactics to the inside didn’t work, he moved to the outside and challenged. While those two were going at it Cloonan stuck his nose into the fray and at one point pulled ahead of them both.
At the end of the race, the 2-Time SUPRS Florida Speedweeks Champion and All-Time SUPRS Winner Rob Warren showed the new kids on the block how it’s done and put his 1st to Finish Race Servers Rocket across the line second. Cloonan somehow held off Sears after a little bumping between those two. At the end of the night all three had a smile on their faces, happy to finish and pleased with a close race.
Everyone Finishes
At the speeds the supermodifieds turn at USA, it’s never too far out of the competitors mind that the next corner may be their last. Certainly there’s been some big crashes in the past at the high-banked speedplant and just last year several drivers failed to see the finish. This year however, every single driver that started, (save for Dave Ohh), brought their virtual supermodified home in one piece. On top of that, not one of the 13 were more than a lap down, and all of the starters from last year that ran this year’s race in Lakeland turned in faster qualifying times and ran a faster lap in the feature.
Speedweeks Championship Down to the Wire
Going into last year’s final race of SUPRS Florida Speedweeks, it was a foregone conclusion that Dave Ohh would come out of Pensacola with his first Speedweeks championship. This year, nothing is certain as the SUPRS racers head to the famed 5 Flags Speedway. With his win, and Ohh’s early departure from the race, after night four at USA, Keysor has a slim 15 point lead over Ryan Cloonan, while Ohh dropped to third 34 points in arrears to Keysor.
If Cloonan wins, Keysor must finish no worse than fourth. If that happens, both would be tied with 370 points and the tie-breakers would come into play. First would be a Speedweeks win, then total wins, then best finish, then best time trial. With the three track records he owns so far, Keysor would come out on top. That’s assuming of course that Cloonan doesn’t click off the fastest lap in Time Trials at 5-Flags. If that happens, then the tie breaker would go to most positions gained over all the races, and it’s likely that Cloonan would win since he’s started deeper in the field than Keysor at most of the four races so far.
If he is to claim his second Speedweeks Championship in a row, Ohh really has to hope that there’s a good car count, he wins, and both Keysor and Cloonan have horrible luck and finish well down in the finish of the 50 lapper on Friday. Don’t count him out though, he won at 5-Flags last year.
Final Night at 5 Flags
The SUPRS drivers are headed to 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL for the fifth and final night of SUPRS Florida Speedweeks 2021.takes place tomorrow night. This track is most well-known for holding the famous Snowball Derby every year, but has also seen it’s fair share of supermodified racing throughout its history.
The last three SUPRS races at Five Flags have had three cautions in 150 laps completed. In each of those three events, a New Track Record has been set. Dave Ohh broke the one year old record last year when he clicked off a 13.833 second lap. Last year Brad Keysor became the third different driver to win a SUPRS race at Five Flags, picking up his first career Speedweeks win by leading the final eight laps of the 15 minute 50 lap feature.
