February 19, 2023 – Goshen, IN…Is it Washington’s Birthday? Is it Lincoln’s Birthday? Is it even a holiday? Whatever it is to you, the 2023 BMK Logistics Presidents’ Day Special is SUPRS way of celebrating and honoring the office of The President of the United States of America with a supermodified sim race.
After a year at the “Home of the Ollie Silva Summer Classic,” Lee USA Speedway, SUPRS officials, in conjunction with sponsor, BMK Logistics, have moved the race to Martinsville to allow completion of a brand-new, virtual version, of Lee USA Speedway for 2024 and SUPRS 20th Anniversary season.
Last Visit Over 10 Years Ago
SUPRS hasn’t had a lot of races at Martinsville Speedway, and to the best knowledge available, the last time the supermodified sim racers did battle at Martinsville was in March of 2010, over ten years ago. According to the schedule for that year, the date was listed as To Be Announced. However, a quick check of the SUPRS Track Record list shows that Myles Maxon set the track record for Martinsville on the date that was listed as TBA, although no results are currently available.
Prior to that, a Gold Crest race was scheduled on April 1, 2009, but Twisted Metal Raceway was used instead. In 2007, I-84 Speedway was on the schedule, but a 50 lap race was run at Martinsville on October 23, 2007 as the second race of that year and was won by Kris Heveron. Throw in two Silver Crest races, (2008, 2010), and a small handful of Modified shows, and it’s no stretch to say that SUPRS hasn’t spent a lot of time at Marty.
So while it won’t be the first time the drivers of SUPRS have competed at the paper-clip shaped ½ mile in VA, it will mark the first time they’ve run over 50 laps, the first time they’ve done it with the rFactor sim racing platform, and the first time the Presidents’ Day Special has been contested there.
Martinsville Speedway is the only NASCAR track to host NASCAR Cup Series races every year since its inception in 1949. The track was paved in 1955 and remains the shortest track on the Cup Series schedule at .526 miles. Its width is 55 feet with 800-foot asphalt straights and tight 588-foot concrete turns, banked at 12 degrees.
No Shortage of Action
No matter where your politics stand, you’ll love this special format that includes a knock-out type format of qualifying heat races. Drivers will fight for the win in the heat races so they can be locked into the top six starting places of what is sure to be an intense 75 lap feature.
The starts are random for every qualifying heat, as is the time of day for the race server. To add to the intensity of the night, heats are 10 laps or five minutes whichever comes first. Once a driver wins a heat, he’s done until the feature, while everyone else keeps racing. We cannot tell a lie, all of this action sponsored by BMK Logistics of East Syracuse, NY, is better than any mattress sale you’ll find!
