Dave Ohh Spins Twice and Comes from Back to Snatch Dodge Win Away From Brad Keysor
February 2, 2022 – Maitland, FL…Call him charmed, lucky, or good, but Dave “SpeedyMan” Ohh was able to overcome two spins and a near miss on the third night of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 2022 Florida Speedweeks on Wednesday to claim his third straight win of the week and third in three years within the tight 1/3 mile confines of Dodge Raceway Stadium.
After leading all but the last five laps, Brad Keysor was left wondering where he could find the magic elixir to slow “SpeedyMan” down as he stood on the second rung of the podium and for the second year in a row, Ryan Cloonan looked at home inside the stadium where he finished in the top three.
Lucky and Good
There was little doubt that Dave Ohh was going to be one of the best within in the tight confines of Dodge Raceway Stadium. Surprisingly, he nearly took himself out of contention for the win, not only once, but twice and was close to getting the black flag for a third incident. His first trip to the back was a solo spin where he did a 360 and didn’t hit anything or anyone. The second was a slight touch of the wheels with Anthony Corsoniti. The third, a narrow escape when Nelson Rodrigues drilled the end of the wall at the pit entrance.
Like a cat with nine lives, Ohh missed it all and brought home his third straight win at Dodge and tied Rodrigues for the most here in SUPRS history with three. Ohh knew just how fortunate he was. “I just got lucky catching a lapped car and used that as a pick to get by Brad,” he said.
“I followed Brad, (Keysor) out early but I checked up too much and hauled off and smacked that wall, which I’m assuming caused the loose condition. Then I self spun out of two, did a 360 but had to go to the back.
“The car was just crazy loose off two and then I got my second incident when Anthony and I got together. That actually sent my left front down the wall which tightened me up a little bit. All in all, I think the damage helped because I was able to carve the bottom like I couldn’t before.”
Similar to what he did the first time he won at Dodge in 2020, Ohh came from the back on multiple occasions. and it isn’t something he is fond of. “I was, I didn’t like being there at all,” he said. “It was nerve wracking every lap. Just a crazy race for me. Very unlucky to start, but very lucky to finish it because without that yellow there was no way I was catching Brad because he was checked out.”
Last Caution is Keysor’s Undoing
The yellow he was talking about was the last one of the night and the one that he was almost involved in.
With less than 15 laps to go Ohh had moved to second place and was praying for a yellow. His request was heard, but as noted, he was nearly a part of it. Coming off of turn two, Ohh had a monster run on Nelson Rodrigues whom he was trying to lap as Rodrigues was setting up Danny Ray to lap him.
Rodrigues used up a little too much track and like so many others had done in the past, drove head on into the blunt end of the pit entrance wall. Just like that, the man that had once dominated at Dodge was almost the driver that took out the other man that was trying to tie him in all-time Dodge wins. Somehow, Ohh was able to miss the flailing car of Rodrigues, diving to the bottom of the track and using up another of his nine lives.
On the ensuing restart, only Ray separated Ohh from Keysor, who had led from the drop of the green flag. As the green came out, Ohh quickly disposed of Ray and charged to the inside of Keysor. The two ran side by side for three of the last five laps until the duo caught Danny Ray again and Ohh boxed Keysor in. That was all she wrote for Keysor who is chasing Ohh in Florida Speedweeks and Season Championship points.
“I used the top because I knew that’s where he needed to be,” Keysor said. “I used the top, but I didn’t know that the spin and smack on the wall had actually helped him to be able to work the bottom. I did what I thought I needed to do to win, but he got me. Hat’s off to Dave on coming from the back and thank to all of our sponsors and to BMK Logistics for letting me do this.”
Speedweeks Points Update
Dave Ohh now has a lead in the SUPRS Florida Speedweeks point standings with 30 markers over Keysor. However, Ohh isn’t so sure he can pull off his second Speedweeks Championship. “I’ll be running for the ARL Legend Car Heat Racing League Championship on Thursday, so unfortunately I’ll be bowing out of the Speedweeks Championship, but I’ll be back for Friday,” said the TMS Wolfpack driver. While that news certainly made a few SUPRS racers heart’s skip a beat, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Ohh could time trial into the SUPRS race, start the feature and park it to go run for the LCHRL championship in order to keep his Speedweeks Championship hopes alive.
Behind Ohh and Keysor, Ryan Cloonan still has a fighting chance sitting in third, 35 points behind the leader. Bob Gangwer is fourth and 2-Time Speedweeks Champion Rob Warren is hanging onto fifth.
Proud to be at USA
SUPRS is proud to be at USA International Speedway for the fourth of five nights of SUPRS 2022 Florida Speedweeks on Thursday, February 3 with a 25 lap feature that starts at 9:05pm.
Just like Black Creek Raceway, USA International Speedway holds the distinction of having hosted a SUPRS Florida Speedweeks event every year that the swing through the “Sunshine State” has been run.
Keith Powell is one of the few drivers in SUPRS history to have won more than once at USA. and is tied with ….Ray Sand, Jr. who has three, is the SUPRS leader for all-time SUPRS wins at USA International. In all there have been ten different winners in the 14 times that SUPRS has raced on the big, banked 3/4 mile in Lakeland, FL. Defending winner, Brad Keysor is one of those ten.
