Dave Ohh Leads All 75 Laps of The Hickory Hustle to Claim First North Carolina Swing Championship
October 21, 2021 – Hickory, NC…Dave Ohh, after taking the lead on lap one of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Hickory Hustle, took off and hid, nearly lapping the field on the way to winning the 18th Annual North Carolina Swing Championship. The race had no cautions, making itone of the fastest in the history of the race at just a tick over 13 minutes from green to checkers. It was Ohh’s first start in the race that determines the overall North Carolina Swing Champion, and he certainly made it a memorable one.
Hammer Down and Hide
Ohh drew the outside front row starting spot in a random draw and had the lead by the third turn after dusting pole-sitter Anthony Corsoniti on the start. “I started out on the front row there and thankfully got out front, I passed Anthony off of two and got by him by turn three,” he said. “From there I knew I just had to go like heck and try to build as much of a gap as possible over Brad.”
Ohh had built a lead of over half a track by the time 10 laps were in. When it was all said and done, Ohh found himself with a used up race car, but smiling after nearly lapping the field. “I almost got to Brad,” Ohh said of catching Keysor.
He was right on the rear nerf bar of second place finisher Brad Keysor for all but the last three laps of the race, only dropping back somewhat at the end, feeling it wasn’t necessary to risk the win. ” I just burned my stuff up,” admitted Ohh. “I almost got up to him but Keith had a bobble and I was closing up on Brad, at that point I just didn’t have anything to lose with the gap I had built up.”
Defending North Carolina Swing Champion, Keysor, ended up second while Ryan Cloonan came home in third place, and for the second year in a row, moved the most places from where he started. Bob Gangwer was fourth for the second year in a row and three-time North Carolina Swing Champion Rob Warren as fifth.
Ohh Feels Validated
After making The Hickory Hustle last year, but having to miss it because of other commitments, Ohh felt some validation. “It definitely feels good,” he began. “Not really redemption, but validation for having made it last year but not been able to race, but getting to run this year.”
“It was a fun race at a tricky track. I had to change my driving style about thee or four times during the race just to accommodate those tires. I had a couple close calls with lapped traffic, but I was able to safely navigate it.”
When asked if the 13 minute race seemed longer than it was, Ohh chuckled and said, “No, it went by pretty quick. I was just thinking in my head maybe I cold reel Brad back in, then I heard two to go, and I was like “already?”
“I’m glad it ended there, you never know what could happen there with worn out tires, but, I’m always liking longer races you know that.”
Like all of the drivers that made it through SUPRS toughest multi-race swing, the TMS Wolfpack driver was grateful for all the work that went on behind the scenes. “I have to say thanks to the SUPRS admins for all the work they’ve done, it’s been a long week for them, and thanks to 1st to Finish Race Servers, Hairbag Studios, Icings on Top, BreezeGraphics.com and all the great supporters of SUPRS, and of course HeatFinder and The Mod Squad.
Ohh now pads his SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship by 10 bonus points for winning the North Carolina Swing Championship. Ohh’s worst finish in the 3 night, 5 race swing through the Tarheel State was a fourth at Dasera, the first race of the swing. Other than the Hickory Hustle, Ohh had two wins and a third throughout the first four races of the Swing.
North Carolina Swing Notes
The 2021 North Carolina Swing had three different winners in the first four qualifying races. With Dave Ohh’s sweep of night two, he’s moved into thrid place on the all-time NC Swing Race win list, (for current drivers) and now has four wins total, (not counting The Hickory Hustle). It was also the fifth time that the second night of the Swing was a sweep by one driver, with Ohh duplicating what he did last year at Southern National and Concord.
Ohh became the fourteenth different driver to win the North Carolina Swing Championship and the first from Connecticut.
Fifteen different drivers received points in the preliminary qualifying races the first two nights of the 2021 North Carolina Swing. Greg Breen and Anthony Corsoniti received the first NC Swing points of their careers.
