Ohh Marches to Veterans Day Special Victory

Share SUPRS:

November 10, 2020 – Radford, VA…Dave “SpeedyMan” Ohh broke Rob Warren’s Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Veterans Day Special win streak in convincing fashion Tuesday at the New River Valley Speedway. Ohh lapped all but second place finisher Bob Gangwer and Warren who finished third. En route to winning the 75 lap NASCAR Heat supermodified sim racing feature, the Union, CT driver led all the laps and set the fastest lap of the feature. Former winner Keith Powell finished fourth, while Kyle Perry continued his good run of top five finishes.

Lead Early Key to Race

After winning the Fast Car Dash, Ohh set himself up for a good start to the 75 lap feature by being on the pole. From the drop of the green he had one thing in mind, get the front and stay there. “Getting to the lead there early helped a lot,” he said. “I could just focus on my line at that point and do whatever I needed to do to get away.”

And focus he did, stretching the lead over outside from row starter Bob Gangwer to as much as five seconds before he encountered a large pack of drivers racing in close formation, but about to go down a lap.

“Lapped traffic was a mixed bag,” explained Ohh. “Some gave plenty, others didn’t give much room. I ran half the race clean, got by a lapped car and then a few more and at least made it to the half way point before getting a lot of damage again this week.

I’d say the scariest point of the race was when a car came flying out of the pits at about 100 miles an hour right in front of me. From that point I was just counting the laps hoping to get the win. This week was better than last, maybe that turned my luck around a little.”

Chasing Points

The victory at the SUPRS Veterans Day Special was Ohh’s fifth of the season which has helped propel him into second place in the season long Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship standings. The driver of the TMS Wolfpack #11 is now just ten points out of first after falling out of the top ten earlier in the season when he had to server a one race suspsension. Ohh had a perfect night in points after Time Trialing in first place, leading a lap in the feature and of course also winning the 75 lap race. And even though it didn’t pay any championship points, Ohh also won the seven lap Fast Car Dash.

Ohh isn’t the only one that’s shuffled back and forth through the standings in the first 10 races of the season. In fact the top seven in the championship points moved one way or the other after the finish of the feature at New River. Most notable is Keith Powell who now sits on top in first place, for the first time this season, with 726 points. Brad Keysor, the point leader coming into the event, dropped two spots to third, but still, is only 13 points out of the top spot and just three behind Powell. Bob Gangwer moved one place to fourth 71 points out of first and the reigning SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Champion, Rob Warren, dropped one spot to fifth, just one behind Gangwer and 72 out of first.

Meanwhile, Kyle Perry, who time trialed in second quick for the night and finished P5 in the feature, took advantage of rookie Ryan Cloonan not being at the race and leapfrogged him to take over sixth in the standings dropping Cloonan to seventh. Gary Waldron, rookie John Held and Carl Becker round out the top ten.

Time for Turkey Shoot

Next Tuesday, the SUPRS racers bring out the big guns as they go on the hunt for a Burgers’ Smokehouse Turkey in the 16th Annual Turkey Shoot at Memphis Motorsports Park. The popular race awards the winner a Burgers’ Smokehouse Turkey delivered to their doorstep in time for Thanksgiving.

The drivers start their hunt for the prized turkey when practice begins at 8:00pm. Time Trials are set for 8:30pm with the six lap Turkey Trot the first race of the night at 9:05pm. Car count will dictate if there is one or two eight lap Heat Races prior to the 40 lap Feature.
