Dave Ohh Wins Fifth Straight Grab o’ the Green and Inaugural Ohio State 500 Series Crown

March 14, 2023 – New Bremen, OH…Dave Ohh didn’t need much “Buckeye Luck” at the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), St. Patrick’s Day Grab o’ the Green Ohio State 500 Series finale’ Tuesday night at New Bremen Speedway. The reigning SUPRS Champion took off from seventh starting place and led 99 of the 100 laps in the feature, lapping all but second place finisher Brad Keysor, to claim his fifth straight Grab o’ the Green, and along with it, the inaugural SUPRS Ohio State 500 Series Crown. Keysor made it close at the end finishing right on Ohh’s tail, but third place finisher, and lap one leader Zach Sears, was one lap down.

Start Was Key

For Dave Ohh, the start, not luck was the key to winning his fifth St. Patrick’s Day Special. Here the field lines up at historic New Bremen Speedway for the start of the feature that Ohh won. (Screenshot by BreezeGraphics.com)

Dave Ohh was one of three drivers that had to start at the tail of the feature inversion for the Elite 8 qualifiers. As the most recent Ohio State 500 Series winner, Ohh joined last week’s feature winner Bob Gangwer, and Brad Keysor who had yet to serve his “most recent winner” handicap. After Nelson Rodrigues, who qualified eighth, and was scheduled to start on the pole, elected to go to the tail of the grid, Ohh slid into the fifth starting spot with Keysor next door in sixth, and Gangwer a row back in seventh.

Ohh wasted no time slicing through the four cars in front of him and had gained the lead from Zach Sears, who started fourth, on lap two. The winner credited this one thing as the key to winning the race. “I knew the key was the start,” said the CT driver. “I knew I had to be aggressive at the start, get to the front and hold the gap because the bottom was the key, there was nothing up top.”

First Ohio State 500 Series a Success

All the drivers leaving New Bremen agreed that the concept of modeling a five race series after the original Ohio State 500 for real supermodifieds was a success. The series winner, Dave Ohh, won four of the five races and enjoyed the longer 100 lap features. “Nice green flag runs, longish races with 100 laps, to get five stars it has to be 200 laps or more,” he said.

Anthony Corsoniti, who had more than his fair share of close racing and great finishes over the course of the five contests said, “It was nice doing a few long races at different kinds of tracks.”

One Caution Race

Visiting a new track for the first time can often cause some hiccups, but the St. Patrick’s Day Grab o’ the Green at New Bremen Speedway proved to be the exception to the rule with only one caution on lap 40 slowing the rapid pace of the 100 lap feature.

The cause of the lone caution was minor, happening when Bobby Hayduk, (who was racing while still recovering from knee surgery), had his foot slip off the throttle pedal. Hayduk, of course, slowed drastically and Danny Ray quickly ran out of room and with nowhere to go found himself doing an Irish jig with both spinning around.

Other than the Hayduk/Ray incident, the rest of the race went down as smooth as a snort of Jamison whiskey, with all but Carl Becker and Nelson Rodrigues finishing the 100 lapper that wasn’t stopped again until the checkered flag flew.

Hoosier State Double Header Next

The 19th Annual Indyana Supermod Challenge on March 21, 2023 is a double header of supermodified sim racing featuring both types of “The Ultimate Short Track Race Car.” Non-Wing and Wing supermodifieds in two separate races, and inverted grids at “America’s Great Race Place”-Indianapolis Raceway Park all make for a challenging night of racing.

PLUS:  The conclusion of the season-long Indyana Supermod Challenge Regional Tour Championship that started back in October of 2022 at LaPorte Speedway and included another wing/non-wing double-header at The Salem Speedway in November. There’s a lot of points on the line and you won’t want to miss any of the rFactor supermodified action from IRP.

Enjoy the 19th Annual Indyana Supermod Challenge from the fast 5/8th mile of Indianapolis Raceway Park with SUPRS LIVE! Our one of a kind live sim racing broadcast produced by Hairbag Studios features Live Streaming Video, up to the second Timing and Scoring, and insightful, fun commentary.
