October 6, 2020 – LaPorte, IN..Dave Ohh of Union, CT, won the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 17th Annual Harvest of Speed Tuesday night at LaPorte Speedway. At 19 drivers, it was the largest field for the race since 2008, and when all those drivers took the green flag, chaos ensued. Ohh was able to steer clear of the chaos to open the season with the win over defending winner Rob Warren by nearly seven seconds. Keith Powell scored a podium for the second year in a row, finishing in third.
Comes from The Back
As has been the case in many of his wins, Dave Ohh came from the back of the pack to claim his first Harvest of Speed after having his Time Trial run disallowed by SUPRS officials. Starting deep in the 19 car field didn’t faze the SUPRS 2020 Gold Crest Non-Wing Supermodified Champion. In fact, he thought it was a bit of an advantage. “Totally surprised I made it as far as I did. I think I got damage lap one turn one, but it seemed like starting in the back helped, and I was able to pick my way through,” said the TMS Wolfpack sponsored driver. Ohh’s win also puts him on top of the Indyana Supermod Challenge which started with this race and ends with a double-header at Indianapolis Raceway Park in April.
Lapped Traffic Treacherous
Lapped traffic, much of which consisted of drivers that had never before raced within the tough confines of LaPorte, proved to be the undoing of leader Rob Warren and second place runner Keith Powell. Ohh credited the lapped traffic to getting to the front the way he did. “It was really how you caught lapped cars whether it was one by one or packed up,” he explained. “I just worked out that way that Rob and Keith got the lapped traffic while I had a clean track. I was avoiding lapped cars and trying to keep the car as clean as possible.”
Warren got trapped behind a lapped car that bounced off the wall then shot into his path. Ohh was right there to capitalize and took the lead on lap 26. Try as he might, Warren couldn’t close the gap. “It happened to Rob. He’d gain when I caught the pack, then he’d catch it and I could pull away. I think Rob and I were pretty close on speed at the end there.”
Ohh, Sears Win Heats
Earlier in the evening, former Harvest of Speed winner, Bob Gangwer set fast time at 12.690 seconds, while Warren won the dash. Ohh and 2019-20 Icings on Top Rookie of the Year, Zach Sears won the 10 lap heat races.
Seven Drivers Made First Harvest Start
Danny Ray, Ryan Cloonan, John Held, Bobby Hayduk, Erich Becker, Dick Schuler, and Steven Vincent all made their first Harvest of Speed starts with Icings on Top Rookie of the Year candidate Held having the best finish and also claiming the SUPRS Charger award finishing in the ninth position.
After the race Held of Hagersville, ON, CAN said, “It was kinda crazy out there but it was fun.” I tired not to make mistakes I tell ya, there wasn’t much clear track that whole 75 laps and it was hard to keep an eye open for all that traffic and hard to tell if it was a leader or someone you were racing against.”
Held, was quick to thank his sponsors saying, “I wanna give a shout out to NAPA. It’s where I’ve been working for about 30 years and we’ll put it, (the broadcast replay), up at work and have a laugh or two about it. This is a fun group of guys to race with, and I’m looking foward to the rest of the year.”
