Southern National and Concord Scene of Dave Ohh’s Second Year Sweep of SUPRS North Carolina Swing
October 20, 2021 – Midland, NC…For the second year in a row, Union, Connecticut’s Dave “SpeedyMan” Oh has swept Night 2 of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), 18th Annual North Carolina Swing. Ohh marched from eighth starting place to the front, and passed leader Brad Keysor with 13 laps to go at Southern National. Then at concord Motorsports Park, Ohh came from his fifth place start and went on to lead the last 30 laps after passing “The King of Concord” Rob Warren.
Restarts and Weirdness Help Ohh at Southern National
Just like last year at Southern National, Ohh found himself chasing down Brad Keysor for the win. Keysor, who started on the outside of row one had built up a decent lead through the middle of the race. “It was tough to get around Brad,”said Ohh.”I had to wait for him to make a bobble.”
Then Ohh added that something odd happened that he couldn’t explain. “I don’t know what happened with one of the later race cautions,” he began. “He kind of faded up high entering turn one and I saw my screen flash, but there was no yellow there. so I just drifted by him. Then on the backstretch, the yellow came out and I had to go back behind Brad. I was just lucky to get by him again. All those restarts really did just help me there, having all of those attempts at Brad.”
Keysor commented after the race, “Those restarts killed me tonight.” Ohh had planned on those restarts that killed Keysor. Last year’s show was a marathon where, in a 50 lap race, there were eight cautions totaling 41 laps. This year the contest was slowed on six occasions for 26 laps. “I’m glad that first race at Southern National didn’t go like last year,” he said. “I ended up putting more fuel in the car which actually hurt me a bit, it upset the car and it wasn’t as stable as it was last year.”
Insult to Injury for Keysor
In a final weird twist of fate, or gaming code, however one may look at it, Keysor was set to finish second to Ohh and watched as Ohh crossed the stripe for what Keysor thought was the checkered flag. Keysor slowed, thinking the race was over after seeing the checkered flag symbol pop up on his screen. Once he realized that something was amiss, he could only watch as five cars flew by, on what he know realized, was the last lap. “I don’t know what happened I got the checkered flag, I thought the race was over. I guess it wasn’t.” Race officials had no easily explainable cause for the incident that cost Keysor a solid second place finish.
Bob Gangwer was the lucky recipient of Keysor’s bad luck and came home second, with Ryan Cloonan chasing Gangwer to the line, but ending up third. Keith Powell and Kyle Perry came from deep in the field to round out the rest of the top five. Five of the 14 starters failed to finish what turned out to be another carnage filled race at Southern National, with drivers once again finding it hard to balance speed with endurance.
Patience is a Virtue for Ohh at Concord
“Here at Concord, I think something that helped me was being more patient than I normally am,” he admitted. “I rode around for the first 20 laps. I was riding there, max maybe 40 percent throttle just waiting for Brad to get by Rob.” Instead of Brad Keysor getting Rob Warren, it was Ohh driving around the outside of Keysor for second place.
“Brad got a little tight there in the kink, and I was able to get by him. It took a couple laps but i was able to get around him on the outside.” It didn’t take long and Ohh was by Warren as well to win by nearly three seconds over Keysor, who eventually got by Warren, who finished in third. Breen held on for fourth, while Bob Gangwer came from thirteenth starting place to finish in the top five.
The TMS Wolfpack sponsored driver set a new track record at Concord, breaking Rob Warrens five year old mark. Ohh lapped all but the top three cars in a race that saw four of the 13 starters fail to finish, most due to crashes.
