Dave Ohh Breaks Year Old Track Record to Set on SUPRS Topless! 200 Front Row for Third Time

August 16, 2022 – Oswego, NY…Dave Ohh will start from the pole position of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS),  18th Annual Topless! 200 at Oswego Speedway after breaking the one year old track record for a lap time of 15.550 seconds and a 144.694 MPH average. Zach Sears will join Ohh on the front row as the youngest driver ever to accomplish the feat.

With his third pole, and fourth front row start, Ohh is now tied with Ray Sand, Jr. on both accounts for most poles and front row starts. And while he has won all three of the SUPRS Triple Crown of Supermodified Sim Racing presented by Icings on Top, he has his eyes firmly set on a “perfect” Triple Crown. If he can pull off the win Wednesday, he’ll join Sand, Jr. in that regard as well.

Pole Run Wasn’t Easy

While he may have made his new track record look easy, according to Dave Ohh, it was anything but a cake walk. With a first lap time of 16.775, he displaced Zach Sears from the pole position and it looked like he was trying to save some tire for the second lap, but he had his hands full. “Certainly not planned,” he said of the slower first lap. “I wanted to get out there and do a good lap early, but I hit something out there on the track and it jolted the car round going into turn three. I spooked myself and just missed the line the first lap.”

Safely on the pole and with his wits gathered back up, Ohh now had nothing to lose on lap two. Once I saw it was good enough for front row, the second lap didn’t matter at that point,” he explained. “I was just committed to sending it.” And send it he almost did, but not to the front as initially intended. “I about looped it coming out of four,” Ohh said. But I was able to hang on and somehow squeeze out just in front of Brad, (Keysor), to re-take that track record that he took last year.

Dominance Doesn’t Equate to Topless! Wins for Ohh

Over the course of his SUPRS career, Ohh has certainly racked up the laps led, but even leading 457 laps of 600 possible, including leading all 200 the first year he sat on the pole, Ohh has but one win the big race-2019. Two of the last three years he was the dominant driver only to have a computer glitch, or lose connection while leading. This year, he’s hoping his luck changes. “Let’s see, I’m on my fourth Topless! 200, and third different set up,” he mused.  “I’m not home and still away, so I’ll be running on my friends (Logitech) G29 at his place.”

Ohh’s seeming disadvantage may be cause for glimmer of hope for some of his fellow competitors, but most know it’s a snowball’s chance in Hades that he won’t make it work to his advantage. “It’s a little tough, but I did run it early in the year. So I’m decently comfortable with it and looking forward to tomorrow.”

First Topless! Front Row Start for Sears

Zach Sears will be making his fourth Topless! 200 start from the best grid position he’s ever had, the outside of the front row. Sears knew he had a shot at the front row and was focused on one driver and one driver alone as he took to the track for his qualifying run. Sears said, “Going in, it was about going faster than Ryan, (Cloonan he held the pole as Sears started his run), he was the main worry.”  “I don’t really have to worry about Dave Ohh, he’ll beat me no matter what, he’ll beat anyone he races against so it was more just trying to focus on Ryan and seeing what he was going to run.”

Sears had some idea where he needed to be after a test run last week. “On Thursday night I put down a lap to see what I could run,” he said.  Not liking the set-up he used that night, Sears found a friend in Ohh. “Dave gave me a set up, (tonight), so I decided to try to run it and I was still slow, but I was still able to beat Ryan.”

Keeping Car Clean is Key

With a second, a sixth and a DNF, Sears short record in the 200 may not be as bad as some would think and when he’s on, he’s bullet fast and has the finishes this summer to prove he is capable of good runs. But his reputation as a driver that has no qualms about moving other drivers out of the way to get to the front comes naturally. It’s something he’s aiming to change for the big race on Wednesday at Oswego. “Dave told me stay away from other cars,” he stated. “I guess that’s the first key, just stay away from people and keep the car underneath me and keep the tires.”

“Going into the Topless! 200, we’ll see what happens. Whatever happens, happens I guess.

Gangwer Takes Guaranteed Starter

2018 Topless! 200 Pole winner, Bob Gangwer couldn’t even make it into the top five qualifiers and has chosen to take his Guaranteed Starter spot for the Topless! 200. Gangwer lines up behind the front row third on the grid after qualifying sixth quick. Race officials scrapped the heat races due to car count, so any driver that shows up on Wednesday will have to start the 200 at the back of the grid based on current point standings.

Ohh and Gangwer are the only former winners that have qualified into the race. Both hope to join John Davidson, Rob Warren, Myles Maxon, Brad Keysor as two time winners. Ray Sand, Jr. is the all-time Topless! 200 winner with three to his credit. In all 11 different drivers have won the prestigious 200 lap supermodified sim race at Oswego.
