Ohh Victorious at SUPRS Veterans Day Special

November 8, 2022 – Radford, VA..In a salute to America’s veterans held on Election Day, Dave Ohh was victorious at the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Veterans Day Special Tuesday night at New River Valley Speedway. It was Ohh’s sixth win of the season and the third straight win in the Veterans Day Special race. He now sits second on the all-time Veterans Day Special win list, just behind Rob Warren who has four. The Union, CT standout is now also tied with Warren as the only drivers that have won the race three times in a row.

Bob Gangwer battled to second after starting in sixth, and Gary Waldron gave up little ground after starting second and finishing in third.

Tough Race for Ohh

Although he set fast time and won the feature, unlike his previous two wins in the SUPRS Veterans Day Special, Ohh had a tougher road to hoe. “It was tough starting in fourth,” he said. I wanted to keep the car clean and just work up to the front. That took all of about two laps when I got into Ryan, (Cloonan), and Gary, (Waldron).”

“I damaged the car there, then I got a lot of damage in a group of lapped cars who were battling. Then I hit the wall and destroyed the car. It certainly was a tough one with the damage and the worn out tires.”

On the way to winning in 2020 and again last year, Ohh had nearly lapped the field. This year though he never got past the fourth place car of Anthony Corsoniti. The TMS Wolfpack sponsored racer admitted he had his hands full towards the end of the race, when he was trying to lap Brad Keysor and knew that Gangwer, who had worked his way to second by lap 23, was closing in. “Bob really challenged at the end, and the last 15 laps, I was just hoping I didn’t give up the bottom,” said Ohh. He then referenced former SUPRS champion and his arch rival as he described the method he used to keep Gangwer at bay. “I ran the “Rob Warren” line, low and slow.”

Gangwer Surprised but Satisfied

While second place finisher Bob Gangwer is a regular in the top five whenever SUPRS visits New River Valley, he was somewhat surprised to end up in second at this year’s Veterans Day Special. “I usually do OK here,” began Gangwer. “A lot of laps and years at this joint, but I have to say, I was surprised when I didn’t make the dash, and even more surprised by how tight and fast the field was tonight, so I’m surprised I got into the top two.”

“I have to say, it wasn’t easy getting past Anthony, Brad, Ryan or Gary, but there’s a lot of satisfaction in being able to race with those guys and see them doing well. It was fun being able to at least make it look like I had a shot at the win, so that’s very satisfying too.”

Gangwer went on to share his thoughts about the winner Ohh. “Congrats to Dave, he’s simply the best, and in my mind, he ranks up there with some of the greats that have run SUPRS like Ray Sand, Jr. Myles Maxon, SFJ, and of course “Rocket” Rob, so congrats to him because I was pretty much resigned to the fact that he’d have to really screw up for me to get by him, and even when he did have a bad lap, he gathered it right back up and kept me where he wanted me.” “Finally, thanks to all of our sponsors and I want to say thanks to all of our Veterans, I appreciate the sacrifices they all make for mine and all of our freedom.”

Experience Helped Waldron

Long-time SUPRS member Gary Waldron used his vast experience to chalk up his second podium of the season. “Experience helped a ton here tonight,” said the Wyoming, MI resident. “I tried to hang with Bobby and Dave, but I couldn’t keep up and the car was just worn out at the end.” Waldron has had several very good runs this year so far and has led more laps this season than the last few added up, including the first 13 in this race. SUPRS officials are investigating the start of the race after watching the replay and seeing the incredible jump Waldron had on pole-sitter and BMK Fast Car Dash winner, Ryan Cloonan.

Shooting for a Turkey

Next Tuesday, November 15, 2022, the SUPRS racers bring out the big guns and will be shooting for a Burgers’ Smokehouse Turkey in the 18th Annual Turkey Shoot at Memphis Motorsports Park. The popular race awards the winner a Burgers’ Smokehouse Turkey delivered to their doorstep in time for Thanksgiving.

The drivers start their hunt for the prized turkey when practice begins at 8:00pm. Time Trials are set for 8:20pm with the six lap Turkey Trot the first race of the night at 8:30pm. Car count will dictate if there is one or two eight lap Heat Races prior to the 40 lap Feature.
