Dave Ohh Dodges Disaster as Bad Luck Befalls Others at Black Kat Klassic
October 27, 2020 – Myrtle Beach, SC…Dave Ohh of Union, CT didn’t have any of the bad luck that most of the rest of the pack did at the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Black Kat Klassic Tuesday at Myrtle Beach Speedway. He got to the front quick as a cat and pranced away with the win by nearly two seconds over Brad Keysor. Keith Powell finished in third place, narrowly holding off Ryan Cloonan at the finish line. Bob Gangwer rounded out the top five finishers.
Only a Few Scares for Ohh
In a race that had 10 caution periods for 35 laps, with four of those coming before lap 12, Dave Ohh didn’t have to worry too much about weaving his way through lapped cars. He still had a couple of close calls coming up to wrecked race cars. “I had a few scares there,” admitted Ohh. “Mostly it was just coming up through the wrecks as they were clearing up, but for the most part guys did a good job trying to keep the cars in place.” After winning his fourth race of the season and his first Black Kat Klassic, the driver of the TMS Wolfpack said, “Lapped traffic was good tonight, we had more cautions, and granted it was a bigger track, but from what I saw, the drivers were much more respectable.”
Leading from the start of the race, Ohh had just one challenger that he was concerned with, especially on the many restarts. “I was concerned about Brad,” he said. “I knew we were pretty close on speed and that I couldn’t make too many mistakes. As long as I didn’t bobble too bad, I thought I could hold him off. That was going to be the deciding factor, the restarts.”
17 Start, 12 Finish
Seventeen drivers took the green flag for the wild and crazy supermodified sim racing event, but after a rash of cautions, several multiple car accidents, and plenty of missing parts including wheels, just 12 of the starters finished the race. There were plenty of black marks on the track and the walls and much of the attrition in the 2020 Black Kat Klassic seemed to have something to do with the bumpiness of the track coupled with a large group of drivers that were tackling the high-speed banks of Myrtle Beach for the first time.
Ohh Obliterates Track Record
Earlier in the evening, Dave Ohh obliterated the existing two year old track record of 16.027 held by Rob Warren. With a lap of 15.434 Ohh lowered the time to beat by over half a second. Brad Keysor was also under the old mark with a lap time of 15.752. The top 13qualifiers were seperated by just a tick over one second. Ohh also won the Crack the Whip race which put him on the pole for the feature. Heat race wins went to rookie John Held, (his first SUPRS checkered flag), and veteran Steve Callahan.
Next Race
Next week, on Election Day, November 3, SUPRS celebrates the 17th Anniversary of it’s first sanctioned race.
The oldest supermodified sim racing sanction plans to remember their past with a NASCAR Heat race using the first mod built in-house for SUPRS called “NHSM”, (NASCAR Heat SuperModified), and will run at Mike Jackson’s South Carolina Speedway, a track that SUPRS has never competed at and one of the oldest modded tracks in the NASCAR Heat community.
Since it’s Election Day, and to allow members plenty of time to cast their vote in the General Election, things get going a little later than normal with practice starting at 8:30pm. It will be a quick night with just a feature that will use special format. The drivers will line up based on their original SUPRS join date, with the driver having been a SUPRS member the longest to start on the pole of the 75 lap feature. It’s SUPRS way of paying respect to the great core of members that have been with SUPRS for a long time.
Fans can watch the SUPRS 17th Anniversary Special after they vote and the polls are closed on SUPRS LIVE! @ 9pm est.
