Keith Powell, Dave Ohh Claim Wins at SUPRS Copper World Classic XV presented by Kern Motorsports, Ohh Named Copper World Champ

February 12, 2019 – Avondale, AZ…Carrollton, OH resident Keith Powell was the winner of the wing supermodified part of the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS) Copper World Classic XV presented by Kern Motorsports, while Dave Ohh won the hotly contested non-wing supermodified feature, which gave him enough points to become the SUPRS Copper World Classic Champion Wednesday at Phoenix International Raceway.

Powell Leads 20 of 25

After a start that was called back after a turn one melee, then another crash in turn one, the wing supermodified 25 lap feature had a hard time starting. Once it did Derrick Backus drove around the outside of his teammate and pole sitter, Kyle Clark to take the lead. He held if for five laps before Powell came roaring by in his Icings on Top “Mayfield Missile.” Powell held the lead to the race that went green for the remaining 20 laps.

Powell had a pretty easy go of it, keeping Backus at bay for the better part of the race. Then Dave Ohh, who’d dropped to the back in the first lap incident and had methodically worked both the low and high side to his advantage, was glued to Powell for the last five laps.

Unable to get by, Ohh, held on for second just .164 second behind the winner, with fast qualifier Brad Keysor a little further behind.

First Copper World Classic Checkers for Powell

For Powell, this was his first Copper World Classic feature win and should help put him back into the lead of the SUPRS Gold Crest Wing Supermodified Championship even if he wasn’t comfortable on the “Desert Mile.” “Thanks to Curt for sponsoring this race,” said Powell. Also thanks to 1st to Finish Race Servers, Icings on Top and BreezeGraphics.com for all they do. It wasn’t real comfortable out there tonight, it was really on edge. I’m just glad to get out of here.”

Rookie Sensations

Icings on Top Rookie of the Year contenders, Brad Keysor, and Dave Ohh were truly the class of the field and dominated the spotlight at the Phoenix mile. Keysor set fast time in the wing cars, while Ohh set a new track record for the non-wing cars. Both drivers won their heat races, and they had the top two race lap times in both features. They also each led at least one feature lap during the night.

Keysor, Ohh Show in Non-Wing

The non-wing race was all about the rookies Keysor and Ohh. After the inversion, Keysor started in third place. After clearing Nelson Rodrigues, who led the first five laps, and the poorly handling car of Bob Gangwer, who would eventually crash in the dogleg, Keysor led a race high 12 laps. That’s about how long it took the other rookie in the race, Dave Ohh to get through the pack again and glue himself the rear nerf bar of the leader.

Ohh tried the high side a couple of times like he had in the wing car, but couldn’t’ make it work, so he waited for restart, and a slip up by the leader in turn one with nine laps to go, to tuck under Keysor and steal the lead and win. Ohh is the sixth different winner in six years of the non-wing feature, and like Powell, took his first Copper World Classic checkered flag.

Copper World Champion

After tallying the feature finish points of the wing and non-wing races, Dave Ohh, ended up with 155 points total and claimed the Copper World Classic Championship. His points total for the two races ties Ray Sand, Jr. as the most ever since SUPRS began using both races to determine the Copper World Champion in 2016.

With the win and the 15 Gold Crest Championship bonus points he received for winning the overall Copper World Classic Championship, Ohh has further closed the gap to the Icings on Top Rookie of the Year point leader Keysor. After coming into the race 727 points behind, Ohh knocked another 30 off of Keysor’s points lead in the rookie standings.
