Keith Powell, Rob Warren Both Struggle, Both Win at Independence Day Twins

July 3, 2018 – Oswego, NY…Keith Powell and Rob Warren continued their winning ways after they each took a feature win in the Supermodified Ultimate Pavement Racing Series, (SUPRS), Independence Day Twin 35s Tuesday at Oswego Speedway. Steve Callahan and Derrick Backus locked up the rest of the podium in both features.

Powell Off to Fast Start in First Feature

Keith Powell started third in the first Twin 35 lap feature and took advantage it moving past pole sitter Bob Gangwer and teammate Steve Callahan by lap two. Powell held the point for the rest of the race, being only slightly challenged by second place finisher Derek Backus.

Point Leader Struggles

Meanwhile, current point leader, Rob Warren, struggled with a loose race car the entire distance and floundered to his worst finish of the summer coming home in sixth. In fact, Warren struggled so much that he brought out the only caution of the race on lap 18 when he made contact with Kyle Clark.

Warren is the only other driver on the circuit besides Powell to win a feature this season, but Powell gained a few points on Warren and was looking to gain even more in the second feature.

Michigan Hill Gang teammates Carl Becker and Gary Waldron, came out of turn four on the front row for the start of the second feature. Waldron powered around the outside of Becker and took the lead right away, but the driver on the move when the green flag flew was the winner of the first feature Powell.

Powell had quickly worked his way into third behind Waldron and Rob Warren who had moved to second by follow Waldron around Becker at the start.

Trouble for Waldron

Looking like he could pull off the SUPRS DoubleDown and score 25 bonus points for winning both features, Powell was minding his own business when Waldron’s Kenowa Auto Supply sponsored car swapped ends coming out of turn four on lap five. Warren was able to snake by as Waldron drilled the front stretch wall nearly head on just past the starting line.

Penthouse to Outhouse for Powell

Powell wasn’t so lucky. Following closely to Warren down the chute, Warren’s sudden move to avoid Waldron left Powell with a clear view of the crash. With no time to react, he smashed into Waldron, ripping the left front wheel from his car, while at the same time straightening Waldron out so he could keep going. Powell’s hopes for a big points night were dashed and he could only sit in the pits wondering “what if?”

Callahan Charges to Podium

Powell’s teammate at CPR Motorsports, “Steady” Steve Callahan, had followed his friend through the field and now put himself into position to claim his third Independence Day Twin 35 win.

Stalking Warren while fending off Derrick Backus, Callahan was unable mount a serious charge after using up his Exide Battery sponsored ride, but hung on for second and his second podium of the night. He also received the SUPRSCharger award for passing six cars on his way to the top three.

Heats without a Hitch

The 10 lap heat races went non-stop with each being quick races at just a little over two minutes, 45 seconds. Bob Gangwer and Steve Callahan were the winners.
